There are 3 potential 720 trans within 50 miles of me.

What all will I need to be with trans when I buy it? Fork and shifter, right? Is that it?

It depends on how big the flywheel clutch cover/disc is that the transmission came off of, if your going to use your flywheel/clutch cover/disc on your truck right now, then you likely will need to use your collar.
You need to know what size the clutch cover/disc is, otherwise your just going to be guessing, do you still have the L16 in your truck?

L16, yes. May switch to my L18 when I change trannys.

I do have a dogleg-but it's of questionable condition. And I'll need a mount for it.

I hate the Tri-Cities. It gets so hot through the day time.
If you want to do any work at all outside you have to wait until night.

At my house though, that is a big issue. For I only have the single porch light...

That was about a half an hour ago(8:05PM). But thanks to the wonderful world of CL...

Yay, this guy. $20, NIB.

Now that I have light at night, when it is comfortable to work, I was able to do this...

You removed the hood pins and the grill.

Hood pins gone!

Fixed the hood release and skavenged a hood spring from a 620. Works good. I over tightened the spring though.

But that created another problem.
When I removed the radiator to reach the cable for the hood release-the bolts were all mismatched and a size SMALLER than the holes.
I had to wiggle all the bolts out. My problem...I can't find bolts to put back in. What thread pitch are those holes? FUCK!

UGH! Previous owner is a fucktard! You hear me, Sergio? Fuck you!

So I loosened the radiator to get at the cable for the hood. But the bolts I took out were all different sizes and none of them correct.
Someone told me 8x1.25. Went to Home Depot and bought 4 matching bolts. I also brought my tap/die set home.

So I start threading the bolts through the radiator-every one of them got stuck 4 threads in. Tap handle won't fit so I decide to remove radiator.
Radiator out; I was able to tap all the holes properly. Progress.

On the initial drive home with this she was running warm to hot. When I got home there was no pressure. Replaced the radiator cap the next day.
It ran cooler, but was still a bit too warm. I bought a thermostat today on a whim. I'm glad I did.

When I had the radiator out, I was able to see into the thermostat housing...um, something was missing. ARGH!!!

I also noticed something else while here...alternator wasn't inline with crank/water pump.
Remove the front bolt...3/16" thick, no nut to hold the back of it. Back nut and bolt were loose as well.
I'm just going to get a long bolt to go all the way through. Also the adjustment bracket is broken. No biggie-but not stoked.

Would not having a thermostat keep it running hot like that?
Would running the through bolt on the alt be a problem?

Also looking at this... Any one have one/heard of problems with one?

I would run a thermostat, engines are made to run with a thermostat, also in the winter you will have heat coming from your heater, not cold air.

My guess...no thermostat, always flowing.

Continuous flow will not allow coolant to cool down because it's passing through the radiator too fast back into the hot engine.

With a t-stat, radiator cools then stat opens to let next batch of coolant through.
180* stat in hand. Hoping it helps. Hoping the radiator isn't clogged.

That is not how it works, go ahead and run it without a thermostat, I will bet that it will not over heat, at least when it is moving anyway.
I have had friends that were so cheap they didn't want to spend the money or didn't have the money to spend on a thermostat, so they did without, the car didn't even warm up before driving all the way to school.
The fact is that with or without a thermostat, if it's going to over heat, it's going to over heat, you know that when an engine is at operating temperature, the thermostat is partially open all the time.

It already doesn't have a thermostat and it does over heat.

Both of those are not OK with me.

Check the radiator(plugged?) and water pump, something is not working properly, it should not overheat if everything is flowing while the car/truck is being driven down the road.
As far as I know, a thermostat is for keeping the engine up at operating temperature, without it the engine will barely get warm, at least when being driven, at an idle(sitting in driveway) the fan may not move enough air to keep the engine cool without a shroud, if you do not have a fan, then it could possibly overheat every time you stop moving.

Have fan. Have shroud.

Other forums are back and forth about whether overheating will occur with or without.

Easy gamble-I'm gonna think installing a thermostat will help to decrease temp for the reason/thought I stated above.

I'll know better tomorrow when I get it put back together.
