1970 dt250 one lunger hardtail project.

So about .... horry shit ... about 16 years ago me and my brother drug a dt250 back up the cliff we lived on, an uncle or someone hung it off the cliff face as an art project or something, so you could see it from i84 several hundred feet below,
Granpa told me if I got it running I could have it, so I spent a week soaking the piston to free the ceezed motor, didnt work, so I got better oil, and soaked it another week.
Being 14 that was about as far as my patience went.... so I shoved a long bolt in the compression release valve hole and hit the shit out of it with the biggest hammer I had... bingo. Little fuel and oil, a quick points adjustment and I had a dirt bike
Granpa was pretty suprized.

Fast forward 6 or eight years, I was moving to Arkansas in my 510, no feasable way to take the yamaha with me... so I tied a new rope to it, and down the cliff it went....

Well I spent a week up at the property cutting downed trees and decided to cart it up the cliff and bring it home.
Image
Today I cleaned it up a bit, and made sure it still ran, it does. Did a quick burnout before I lost spark, points are crap, fixed the points and broke the fuel line in half, fixed the fuel line and snapped the filter in two.... so I said fuck it and just hosed the moss off of it and started measureing what steel I need.
Image
This is probably going to be the easiest bike to hardtail ever.

Plan is to strip the rear off, DONE
Weld the 4 tubes to for the rear, DONE
Extend chain,
Make seat,
Make rear tank latch (currently held down by seat)
Move pegs,
Extend rear brake, DONE
Make/extend shifter,
Move tach, DONE
Remove, front fender, DONE
Fluids,
Points (or cdi, one cylender so easy peasy)
Tires,
Ride.

I may peice together a dt360 motor I found and give her some more street credit.

But it only has to keep up with my moms 250 rebel... wich it more than does already, 2 stroke power is pretty awsome.

One thing I noticed I dont like is I will have to.secure the hub, its drum.brakes and the center looks like its held from rotating buy this strut bar.

Still has the tool kit. One of the better equiped bike kits too.

Love it man, keep up the pics and the progress. I am watching this!

2 stroke power is amazing. Just took my KX250 on 40 miles down at browns camp. Beat all to shit :|

Was the oil injection system deleted or just not used on the 175? Our old DT250 had the tank with sight glass in it under the seat.

That was the compression release, the dt1 models (68-70) didnt have the oil injection, or the cdi, I guess the 2 go hand in hand maybe? It is a 250 right now.

After more reseach it seems the compression release was after market, and it did come originally with oil injection. I never sawIit, allways mixed.

Figered out the height I wanted, need to mod the bars to go any lower in the front, torch bent my 2 upper bars, you can see I left some stuff long, disnt want to cut it short and regret it so I laid out the upper bars and I will cut to match.
I also shortened the tach cable and re made the sleeve,,,, that was a bit more coplicated that it first apeared to be. But I got it where I want it. Might not run a speedo, it reads speed off the front wheel, and I dont want the long ass cable coming back.
Got the rear wheel as far back in the stock lower arm as possible, need another 2 or even 3 inches to be happy.
Heres some pics.

Couldnt mock it up with the stock swing arm to the length I wanted, so I made some lower bars,,,, not sure that I like them, might section it to the stock front part so it bends back in nice. Or ill burn it in with the straight lower bars, now that I got the length I want (4 inch stretch) I need to make new top bars.
Having fun but my baxk started to hurt so im takeing a break.
Oh, and im out of argon for the wire feed.

I tacked it together, but no argon has me stalled, thought I tacked it all good enough to sit on... I was wrong.
So I didnt even think about how I was going to run the exaust, if im really luck I can use the stock pipe. I really want to because I like it alot, and the gaurde is pretty sweet.
Had to notch out the back of the pipe to get it to actually fit, and I had to heat and bend the whole unit to seal correctly at the head.
I really liked the tack location before I remembers the exaust lol

I will have to remember to putt my left leg down on stops or I will be reminded by a hat ass pipe.
And if it looks like the rear end is alittle wonky... its cause I broke the tack welds on the bottom bars flinstoneing it around the garage.... because it was fun.
