1994 Mazda/Ranger Technical Help

#1

Post by metalmonkey47 » Thu Mar 19, 2015 8:47 pm

So my younger brother just bought a 1994 Mazda B4000 aka Ford Ranger 4.0L that we snagged for a pretty good $1300. Come to find out, the check engine light was ON, but burned out. I ran it through the KOER test and found two codes.

I don't have the code #'s on me at the moment, but they indicated Bank 1 and Bank 2 lean condition.

-We went ahead and smoke tested it at a buddies shop looking for notorious ford vacuum leaks and found none.
-Ford 4 wire MAF's are easy to test if you know what you're doing so I went over that as well and it checked out fine.
-Both O2's were OEM Ford, and Bank 2 (driver side) was physically damaged so we replaced both.

Since replacing them, the Bank 2 code disappeared, but we still have Bank 1 Lean, and now we have a second code indicating Bank O2 'Indicates full Lean' or something like that...

Since then we;

-Replaced damaged injector pigtail on B1.
-Replaced plugs (mainly because they were in poor shape and we wanted to see how they looked)
-Checked Fuel Pressure which is ok

Part of me wonders if that Bank 1 O2 is crap, because of the second code that arose after changing it, however it's strange that the CEL after resetting the light, comes on immediately starting again. Seems strange that The O2's can detect a lean condition within seconds of starting.

Any thoughts on this?

this looks like a pretty good guide. http://troubleshootmyvehicle.com/ford/4 ... 174-page-1

Seems decently specific and exhaustive...

Sadly that won't work, since this is OBD1.

But we did find the exhaust flange gasket just a few inches before the 02 has a massive leak so I think we've found the issue.

Well that guide did list lots of potential problems too.

Also, FUCK RANGERS!!!! It has to be my least favorite truck ever. I hate frontiers and titans, but ill work on one any day over a ranger. Fuck those trucks. Fuck ranger drivers too, they are almost as bad as prius drivers, especially if they have a canopy on, only exception is if they are white rangers.

Jacob something tells me a lot of that is personal lol.

We had a brand new 2013 Ranger at work a few years back. I was doing a u-turn and the power steering pressure line decided to eject itself from the pump. Fail.

Yeah I don't really mind this ranger...it has little things but it seems solid. I HATE new rangers with a passion. But this little one is good...for now.

You have to understand, I worked at a shop that worked in trucks nearly exclusively. Rangers are put together oddly/cheaply. They aren't like any other ford truck. And they drive badly. Really, every other truck is better in any way. I really really dislike rangers.
