Moar Tech Content

#1

Post by DRIVEN » Thu Sep 04, 2014 5:50 am

I think the cards are a great idea for recruitment. But once we get new potential members to check out the site we need more content to keep them coming back. There are several great build threads scattered around but we don't have a lot in the way of tech and how-to. Some, but not alot. Those are the things that new Datsun owners typically go looking for online. What I propose is that when we get the opportunity, we make a quick how-to or tech thread when we do projects on our cars. Remember, pics are important.
These are some really good examples:

Great Point

I think content along these lines will also attract new members that find us online.

Not only is it important to post Datsun specific content, but also some generic content (eg: padded dash restoration) for things that we've had a hard time finding the needed information on, either at other forums or other web sites. I love seeing wayno posting his repairs and custom upgrades to older trucks, where else can you find stuff like that? I know the stuff that I've done with my 620 has been covered many times on many sites (except for my dash repair), but I will make a point to better document the progress on my old RL411 rescue. What can I say, it's what I've got going right now. I know there isn't much of an interest in the 410/411's these days, but some day there might be - because DATSUN

I agree. I have had a habit of just doing everything in my thread. Ill try to find things that are worthy of a thread. I think I have a series of windshield install pics...

I also want to start hosting some FSM and Wiring diagrams. It never hurts to have more sources for all of that stuff.

More tech is needed(documented) for future owners, and us old guys that lose info tucked in the memory bank(head) in time,it filters out slowly

Encouraged to see this thread.

I will try to finish my turbo rebuild , distributor rebuild , head rebuild-ish/more of valve lapping in the pictures/lifters than anything/valve seals ? , and maybe some other tidbits of miniscule information throughout my build threads or pictures in general I can contribute to the NWd's.

I might try to re-use pictures for simple things such as water pump replacement , alternator replacement , voltage readings with a multi-meter (basic BASIC) , etc

Very much appreciated, Blue. I know write-ups can be time consuming but NO ONE documents projects better than you.

*Checking for cylinder head flatness *done*
*Valve grinding *done* (includes removing valves steps).
*Cheap rear main/thrust cap puller tool *done*

I think I can just do the how-to based off the turbo dis-assembly , and matchbox distributor dis-assembly from the photos I have currently , and say "re-installation is reversal of removal". I really don't see why not. For the turbo it would be just torque specs upon re-installation , and for the distributor the only thing to know is how to press in the bushings/type of bushing/get the bushing(s) out (top and bottom).

OOO. I want to see 240z rear brakes. Kyles Z basically doesnt have rear brakes. And at stupid prices for new cylinders Im thinking I would sooner make a bracket for discs.

Alrighty ^^^ I'll try to do that one next ! Yeah the cost of the rear cylinders are a bit much to swallow. I switched one of my 73' 240z cylinders that was seized HARD for a 71' (different casting yet basically the same design). All I had to do was change the rear brake line (longer one...that I remember). Put new kits in both , and off it wen't without a hitch or worry. I have no doubt in my mind that the later 280z backing plates can be put on for budget , and ran on the earlier 240z's as well (way waaaaayyyyy cheaper wheel cylinders as well ! yesh ! ). It was actually what I was going to do until I found I had a good early 240z cylinder to put on there. I can't remember who or where exactly at this very moment , but they were having some trouble with rear disc brake conversion alignments (will try to go through my notes and bookmarks).
