Re: project izzo
I ran mine with that Napa stuff in it for a year or two, and it started grinding going into 2nd after a while, but that was a bunch of driving. Probably won't hurt with a week's worth of driving, but if you can help it, I'm sure you won't regret using the right stuff. I dunno.. being a guy that works on cars for a living, I have a tough time advocating anything potentially destructive; either to friends or clientele.

Your local Napa should be able to order you the Sta Lube. That's where I get mine; it's a CRC product and alot of their products are made by the same company.

Re: project izzo
you're right Micro.
I actually was able to locate it. I will run what I have till I can afford it, probably a month. I don't plan on driving it further than local. hell it may just sit for that month anyways... http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Catal ... 0006410049
Maybe i can buy it by the qt instead. But we'll see. If you look hard enough you can see thats API/GL-4

Re: project izzo
Here's what I was told. The sulphur compounds bond to a thin layer of atoms on the surface of the two rubbing parts. On the much harder steel, these two layers are well supported and they slip easily, but on much softer copper alloys such as bronze this layer isn't supported and will wear off exposing the raw alloy. The sulphur will again amalgamate with the surface atoms and again be rubbed off to be replaced again..... and again, eroding the precious brass synchro rings away. If this is not exactly what happens... it's close.
Generally GL4 has about 4% anti scuff agents in it. This is a low enough concentration that modifiers prevent them from harming the synchros. GL5 has about 6% additives and you might think 2% is no big deal but it is really. 6% is 50% more than 4%. Big difference plus the modifiers are likely not present in GL5 which is used in applications like differentials where there is no copper parts.

cleaned up the wiring in the engine bay. a lot of the factory tape was gone. Wrapped new tape, made it look better. It had 4 battery cables.... So i took two out. Still more to fix :\
scrubbed the interior top to bottom then hit it with mothers. smells good, looks brand new.. Aww yeah!
Pulled out my early 720 tachometer and fixed the needle on it... Just have to get a 2.2k resistor and should be havin a stock tach in there

Re: project izzo
its gotten at!
Fucking napa auto parts They just built a massive store, and are moving so they are closed on the 26th and 27th. Today is the 25th... and they decided to just close anyways. So i gotta source out some GL4, i think the super small napa has a couple small bottles. But i wanted the gallon. It is a way better deal.

This can wait a week. Tranny isn't going to implode. It's not like pouring gas into a styrofoam cup.izzo wrote:its gotten at!

Re: project izzo
eh. i sourced out two quarts of Sta-Lube GL4. I know it would have been fine for a week or so... But I just couldn't leave it in there knowing it's going to dick it up... To top it off, someone was lazy at the DMV and didn't read the miles correctly. they marked it at a way higher mileage. mistook a 1 for a 7 at so on Dicks.
according to the old datsun pickup website. it takes 1.7liters of gear oil. Converted into quarts, that is just less than two quarts. So I should have just enough. Since all the GL5 was brand new that I put in there. warmed up the truck for 20 minutes. Then drained it into a pan and saved it. The GL5 will be fine for the rear end.. Might as well replace that fluid with some fresh!

Re: project izzo
2 bottles of sta-lube gl4 in the trans. by my calculations it shouldn't have taken all 2 bottles. Ah well. maybe it's not sitting level. maybe google conversion is off, or maybe i read the measurement wrong. IDK. to quarts should to it for now. just driving a mile round trip to work.
Insurance is switched over. taking her to work today
