soon to be LZ2.3 521 :)
Re: soon to be LZ2.3 521 :)
So I have a new bit. How far will I end up drilling down into the block?

Not far. You can see the other holes, its not deep.
I did break one bit. It grabbed the block and my drill just kept spinning.

So I may take the block over to Flatcats, I shake for one, and drilling a straight hole hasn't always been easy for me.
thank you for the answers, I didn't think I needed to use the hole bit, just wanted to make sure you know..

Sounds like he was a headache to deal with.
We use him through work. Always does a great job. Always fast.
I have heard nothing but great things about him.
But you're done with him. Yay!

Yeah hes isn't a bad guy, i mean I went there around 5:20 today and he was sitting having a beer with a few guys, asked him where mine was, then he handed me one.
I asked how much this is going to run me, he said it it rounds up to 320....
Sitting there a sec I told him I had 260 in my pocket... He said that sounds alright I guess... That was kinda it. Ha
So now that I'm done with the shop its time to get down to business!

I still need piston rings.
I want to make sure I don't need a different size bearings as well.
I've got tomorrow and Saturday off so I'll be on it. Saturday flatcat an I are drilling the block so tomorrow I'll be checking clearances.
It was a running kinda running motor things should be OK just you know part of the build.

When putting the pistons on the rods there isn't one way they should be right?
Clean, lube, put pin in hole... Clappy things to hold the pin.. Right?

Re: soon to be LZ2.3 521 :)
from what i recall. the piston caps should all go on the correct piston number, facing a certain direction. the book will tell you how to align the rings. Flatcat I'm sure will know this. I think the piston caps will say which number they go on, and which way they face. When ever I pull crank/piston caps off. Beforehand I figure out which side of the motor I am going to be working on, and then use a punch to mark which one is what and what way they should point towards. Just so I make sure everything goes back the same way. I think they are line bored or something from MFRing so they should go back where they came from or some shit lol.

Re: soon to be LZ2.3 521 :)
Are you talking about main and rod bearing caps izzo?
Its all fun. I remember building my motor, I followed the directions from the how to build a datsun ohc engine book. I also used the FSM for the motor for double checking tolerances, or another way to check things.
Just read things, make sure understand what it says, so that you can become familiar with it.
You'll be sooo happy when that motor starts up for the first time. Nothing like knowing you built it, you checked the tolerances, you filed the piston rings, you properly torqued the bolts, you did something most wouldnt even conceive of doing. I have had guys respond to me after I said I build the motor, ask "which shop did the work?" and they are always surprised when I say I built in my garage, and just had the shop bore it out.

I couldn't agree more with you laecaon! I loved building the l18, I followed everything the book told me to do... It was more the awesome starting the 18 for the first time. It was like..... Coming up on e! Habaha no it was this feeling I've never gotten before... Just hella proud of my self...
The 18 was in good shape. I didn't need to change the bearings I didn't need to get it honed but I wanted the experience..
I should have just build an 1.9 while I was at it but I didn't know as much as I do now.
The 18 started first try!! Drove just about perfect too. After thinking about it and looking over head bolts for that thing after the hg went, it was pearly a head bolt problem.. I cleaned the fuck out of those blots bit nothing can bring back threads, even the top portion of some of the bolts were kinda pitted.. I guess I didnt even think about the bolt how it twists and stretched unlike the ARP studs. The bolts were clean and looked goodbut were not..
I think i need more plastagage.
Oh and flatcat, well everyone 120 bucks is around what the ARP bolts a run you.. I'm sure you guys all know but their great!! Must get.

Re: soon to be LZ2.3 521 :)
After reading...
And more reading just to make sure I assemble the pistons onto the rods the right way.
Notch in the front and oil squirt hole on right side of the block, oil filter side.
Like so...

Not sure if you all can see the plastagage but its there..
Mains are all good!
i'll be doing connecting rods.....
now..
