Draynor's Diesel Maxima

#1

Post by Draynor »

So I bought a Maxima. 82 diesel, factory 5 speed :D

I have always wanted one but I hate autos. This one popped up on craigslist was a 5 speed and diesel, I couldn't pass it up. So Friday Jacob and I went to check it out and I drove it home!

Runs pretty well, and is fun to drive even with some issues it has. Almost nothing electrical works besides power windows. Has average interior some rips and tears, some rust, the normal.

Plan is to fix the problems making it not derivable on the street and use it as a daily while I swap my wagon. Maybe turbo it down the road? VIP car? drift car? IDK when the time comes ill do something. I do plan on keeping it, at least for a little while ;)

I also moved the day after I bought it. So I now have a garage to play in, But it is kinda packed right now. That will be fixed soon. It also has 220v hook up :D :D :D

Since NOTHING works. I think its a fusible link. I mean, no power to the interior fusepanel which controls 90% of the car. Its gonna be a simple fix. And since Derek moved closer to me (same town now), things will happen.

No lights work, none, including brakes.
Dash does not work, no lights, indicators, speedometer.
Im guessing the Glow plugs dont work because of said issues (why it wont cold start on its own)
Engine runs perfectly, idles smooth. A bit rich though, as there is mass amounts of black smoke on acceleration (rollin coal!)
Rear doors dont open, I think they are stuck locked...

There should be some black and green wires coming off the positive battery post leading to a plug, these are the fusible links, if they feel like they have no wire inside of them, they are blown.
It's easy just to use a volt meter and check the plug end of the wires, no power, they are blown.
Sometimes the main plug on the battery post gets melted, that is the plug on the battery post that has 4 wires coming out of it, sometimes if you wiggle that plug, it makes a good connection, and everything starts working again.
Is the injection pump vacuum operated, or does the throttle cable go directly to the injection pump?

Only thing that would make that any cooler is if it was a wagon. But most of us already knew that. ;)

Pretty sweet find. Probably right about the fuseable link thing. Let us know what the MPGs are.

There are updates to be told... but not yet.

For right now. The Alt is not charging. And the Diesel Alts are different.

Ahhhhh.

Might check with Auto Electric by Shute park. They've been able to rebuild some odd stuff for me in the past.

Diesel alts are VERY different. Wayno would know.

there is a vacuum pump on the back, vacuum for the brake booster, also an oil line and a air/oil return line to the crank case. I'm not sure why manifold vacuum is not sufficient...

Sarcasm?

I'm familiar with vacuum pumps on diesels. Often they take the place of what would have been a distributor and also act as the oil pump drive. I've never worked on an LD so I didn't even consider the alt being integrated with the vacuum pump. Just assumed it was probably in the distributors location. Learn something new every day.

A splined shaft sticks out the back for a vacuum pump.

I had never thought about how diesel and petrol intakes could be different. It makes sense now.
