Ugh I hate night shift. Every day I do nothing when I wake up, go to work, come home, have the biggest urge to work on the car but its 1 am and the grinder doesnt sound like song bird.

Got some welding done today. Clean metal is easy to weld, Every once in awhile ran into an odd spot on the factory pan where it didnt like arcing, but mostly just had issues with heat/contaminates . I just decided to turn up the power and have it burn off the remaining paint/oil. Also made my first welding fire. Good size spark landed on a oil soaked blue paper towel, flames were kinda tall, but no match for my shoe. I also sectioned a part of the Pick up tube, making the first 90 degree bend a little closer to the block and also making it angle a little less, need to extend the tube in a couple spots.

Ill be sure to leak test all of this when done.

I dont think so. The sump is going to be quite small. So I dont think it will be an issue. Nissan didnt see fit to install any baffles in the stock pan, but they did do a windage tray.

Starting to think out my fuel supply. Think I am gonna go with an in tank pump, and a simple spiral baffle. Since quietness of the pump is feature I like, I have found a comparable 255lph (yes way way overkill) pump that doesnt cost a fortune. Cant find negative reviews, and everyone says its quiet, some even saying quieter than their stock fuel pump. http://www.deatschwerks.com/products/fu ... 200-detail 3 year warranty and full E85 compliant (not that I am ever doing E85, just that not all pumps support E85 as it tends to be harsh on them), and a company which seems active to help and offer advice, makes it seem like a wise decision.

Yea, their injectors seem to be a mixed bag, but I still find mostly decent reviews. Their pumps though seemed to be loved by all.

Started looking at FPR, bout crapped my pants. Sticker shock. No idea that a FPR would cost so much. oh well.

Very nice work dude. Kudos to you for doing all this.

Have a question for you, or anyone really. but once you modify the pan. Do you then fill it with water or something to see what it will hold, and then just put that much oil in it once you get the motor together and installed?

Yes ish. I am planning for just shy of 5 quarts. Though I think it will be easy to figure out on the ca as the dipstick mounts to the oil pump, which bolts directly to the pan.

soon more better work will commence. My welder and air compressor haven't been home at the same time in a month. And my cherry picker has been gone for awhile too. Need to clean the garage again to have all of it fit...

I guess you could use maths and stuff :rofl: To measure and figure out what the H/W/D would be for aboots 5 quarts. Neat about the CA, i didn't know about the oil pump and such. Never seen a CA in person really.

So I have been incredibly lazy. Sunday I sat on my ass, and eventually did the thermostat on the Saturn.

Anyways, I have gotten a little further on the pan. Basic shape is done. Im thinking its most definitely going to need baffles, but only for braking...

No pics, because well, I was distracted both times I was working on it.

But tonight, even with the pan unfinished (and maybe its a good idea...) I test fit the block and pan into the car. Did it by hand too, Cherry picker isnt at my house. Pan clears the crossmember effortlessly, but it is close. I bounced on the block a bit to try and get the pan to touch the crossmember. Depending on the tilt of the motor, the steering linkage may or may not be too close. Also once the block was in the car, I realized that it may be too low how I have it mounted. Like with the dogleg still in the car, and holding the input shaft in the middle of the rear main opening, the top of the tranny case was considerably lower from the tunnel. I dont know if I like that. Probably going to space it up, even if its just for a tad more Pan clearance.

And because I was curious. Its close, but its not touching. And I do plan on getting the Radiator closer to the Core support.

Pan is welded up. Need to grind down some of it. Then leak test. Then add some baffles... no pictures right now...

I took the block to the machine shop, maybe Im not ready... I think I need to buy pistons. Sad face.

So do I go the cheap route or the good route?

Cheap is using SuperTech (owned by Mahle) pistons, made of 4032 billet. I can get these for a little over 4. There are a lot of people with good success using these, but there are also the few, HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THAT DESTRUCTION!!! They dont seem to hold up to detonation super well, but it mostly depends on the application, like the Miata ones crack instantly universally. Also found a few people complaining about broken wrist pins. I think that was the cherry on top to make me think of doing something else...

Wiseco doesnt have provisions for the oil squirter and thus needs annoying modifications.

No one seems to like JE pistons (or rather, they buy something else for the money)

And what I am leaning to is CP pistons. Seems to be praise from everyone. They use 2618 billet. Pistons are weighted within 1 gram of each other. I think the only gripe I have is that everyone also says, the pistons are noisy when cold. I dont like noise.... But I think I can get them for a bit over 5, and that would be better peace of mind.

Other alternatives would be Ross Racing, and Arias.

I'd put up with a little temporary noise to get reliability. Still kinda curious as to whether the cylinders might hone out. Then you could just keep your original pistons. Hard to tell how bad the pitting is in the photos.

At first glance, the guy at the machine shop said, well it might be possible to just hone it. but the piston clearance will probably be too large.

Actually I should probably call them... I havent heard anything yet...

Called the shop, some of the rust pockets are pretty deep. He recommended 30thou over. So 84mm bore it is, and now I will have a CA19DET... Perfect.

Fetching the block now. I need my next paycheck to hit before buying the pistons.

Or I just need to finish the work that will net me a decent chunk of change...

I need wewlding gas... Im out. Its hard to pack things into the first 4 hours of being awake...

Anyways, block is back, definitely not good for stock bore. Just a hot tank and hone job (which he will even credit back when I take it back in), and you can feel a pocket in cylinders 2&3.

Well, The feeling of working on the Datto is in the air again. Motivation? Well same as it always has been. Canby? Maybe but whatevers. Moving out of the house, yes. Also I havent had money in a bit to be spending on the Wagon, due to the death of the Saturn, buying another car (car payments! and worse gas mileage while taking premium!), going on a 4 day camp, and Christmas. But a $.50 raise seems to have helped a bit, and now I seem to be making money.

As of now, I have enough to purchase pistons, and I get paid on Thursday. So I am feeling good. And then I am hoping to have the block back at the machine shop at the end of the month for boring and piston swapping. I have decided to go with the CP Carillo pistons, because its part of the motor I never want to go wrong.

Next things to purchase: Main and Rod bearings (Clevite 77 series), and a complete gasket kit, waterpump, timing kit, and the motor can go back together.

New things to report:

I picked up a fuel pump. Ultimately decided I didnt want to deal with a fuel pressure regulator, at least not now. So I decided on a OEM solution. Found a Denso unit on Amazon for $44. Part number 950-0154. Application? 91-99 3000GT turbo, 88/89 MR2 Supercharged, and 87-92 Supra Turbo (7MGTE motor). That should do for a bit.

I also got a new OEM oil pump. Well OEM is the only option, because its so weird... Anyways found it for $100 on Amazon (through FRSport.com, a very nice and reputable seller), which beat out just about everyone else I could fine. Came in a Nissan box, with correct part number, and double wrapped in plastic and oil soaked cloth.
