How to remove factory paint off Enkie wheels

was wondering how you would go at removing the original paint off. The previous owner said he tried sandblasting and sanding and he didn't really like either way. Is this power coating on the wheels?

Figured there's only so many ways to remove it like sandblasting, sanding, soda blasting or by chemical's. What would you suggest is the best way ?

disclaimer: was told the wheels are Enkies 92's but not seeing the Enkie logo on the back. Anyone know for sure ?

I have hear of guys getting good results with this product(it contains,Methanol and is supposed to work good,its available at wally world for not to bad a price)

They do look like enkie, no marks anywhere on them?

I've used brake fluid to remove paint on small parts that I thought were powder coated. I put a gun slide in a ziplock with maybe 1/4 cup of brake fluid and left it over night. Next day all the paint was either gone or bubbled up and wiped right off. Neutralized it with warm water and repainted it. Probably 3 years later the new paint is fine. Not sure how you'd go about that on a wheel though.

Oven cleaner is supposed to strip paint too.

But kind of etches the surface(dont want that on the outer lip)

All I know is, nothing touched the clear coat on my wheels. Tried 3 different strippers, brake fluid, I've cleaner. None of besides sand paper did the trick.

now I don't think the paint is that terrible but its good quality stuff. You might ask jrock what he would do... Try oven cleaner or maybe drain cleaner... Just be careful around the lips if its bare metal and not coated.

You want to break the surface(sand) in order for the product to strip it

I'll check Wally World tomorrow and see if they have any. Might not, we have tweakers, they like Meth'anol and Wally might not stock it.

yeah, no marks and I looked every where before I purchased them but that didn't stop me from buying. I had indy510 photo chop my 68 wagon and it so happens is the same style of 15" wheels.

I'll try the brake fluid tonight into a few of the divets and see what the results are tomorrow.

Not sure if this is true, heard oven cleaner works great but the chemicals will penetrate into the pores and will always be their which might make the paint peel later down the road. But I'll do a small spot for testing. Thanks

Oven cleaner does etch the metal,definitely do not get it on the lip!

Not sure on paint but, the factory clear coat on my Honduh wheels is gone thanks to a few applications of aluminum brightner. The wheels are pitted from several eastern Oregon winters and the rocks they use on the roads. Decided to spray them with aluminum acid and bam! They look really nice cleaned up now.

just curious Bill, you got a pic to check out. Know a person that might have some laying around for me to try.

what I've tried is carb cleaner/CC, brake fluid / bf and engine de-greaser / ed.

So far the carb cleaner is working the best but is not going to be the cheapest or easiest product to use.


Think I'll contact a power coating business and see if they know.

welp, time for this slacker to bump this thread. I did a test to see how the stripper would react to the surface. Let it sit for about 15 to 20 minutes like the instructions said to do. Took a gasket scrapper and it came up pretty easy. If left on a little longer will help soften the paint more.



that turned out OK so I sprayed more stripper, let it sit for 20 minutes. Used the scrapper and an old wire brush to get into the lug-nut holes.




the results were good.


used a little soap and water to clean it up. Used a bottle brush to get into the lug nut hole to clean them up.


One more application should finish the job of removing the paint. That will be at a later date, hoping before the year is up.

I'll be seeing what I can find to do the wire mesh area. Stay tune
