Chrome piston rings?

Post by Walt »

Hello again everyone, and my apologies if this gets asked often, i couldn't find much with the search.

A friend of mine is putting an L20 back together, and his old top rings were chrome, but with his new set, the top ring is unplated. Is this going to be any sort of a problem down the road?

You really dont need chrome except for Turbo/supercharger use. And chrome is way harder to break in. Regular old rings work great in normal motors.

Agreed. Cast rings are just fine, even preferable, in most applications. They break in almost immediately and seal great. Tell him to make sure he checks the end gaps and never give them a second thought.
When the only tool you have is a hammer every problem starts to look like a hippy.
