The outer most grime is easy to remove. The bottom stuff that is like tar is always a PITA.

I've had good luck with Greased Lightning from Home Depot. Be careful tho, it will fade paint. I sprayed some on a motor, waited 30 seconds and hit it with a wire brush, then washed with hot water. Seemed ok.

BTW, napa brand Aluminum brightener works amazing. Spray on, wait 30 seconds, hit it with a wire brush. It brakes the grime up like dawn dish soap in a greasy food pan. Once some of that alum brightener stuff gets mixed in with the greasy grime, the greasy grime doesn't like sticking to anything really..

So...pics of shiny like new engine?

It's alright, I'm sure I'll find a use for the green stuff. Possibly on brakes? lol

No pics of the clean engine yet, I sit have work to due on it. Soon!

First things first... Fram is temp. Gets replaced with this. No reason to run a good filter for a few starts then replace it with another good filter. Run a shitty filter, flush engine, run good filter. :fu: :fu: :fu:

Got he flywheel machined today. Turn around time... 40min. Good service.

Took the exhaust mani down to the machinist to see what he recommended to get the broken bolts out. I tried drilling them out... it was a disaster. These are probably the worst bolts I've ever tried to extract. Terrible! Anyway, the machinist said.. well you've drilled through them, just use a tungsten carbide dremmel bit and shave it the rest of the way out. Tap, stud, nuts. Done. So I bought and used this. It worked amazing. Saved my ass for sure.

More cleaning.. and scrubbing with Brakleen (red)

Lol. Seems like a lot of work man on the exhaust manifold. I just used a grinder and cut those pipes off, ran a bead in there, then hit it with a grinder to make it smooth. Done.

Those were easy, I just ran a bead in there and made a round pool up top. Done. The hard part was getting the broken exhaust studs out. What a bitch!!

Pour a gallon of gas on it and clean that thing.
Then clean the firewall too.

I've been scrubbing like a mofo. I'm doing a few paint touch-ups where it looks like brake fluid killed the paint. Firewall has been scrubbed. Right now I'm just getting the thick grease off and scrubbing the hard to reach spots. After that it will get pressure washed with soap.

Like I mentioned.. I've been scrubbing the engine bay. Lower firewall is the cleaned part.. it used to look like the upper part. I'll still pressure wash it. It's still pretty dirty since I was just using rags and soapy water. It will get cleaner.

Right half has not been cleaned yet... probably should have cleaned it all up but I wanted to first repair the bare metal on the frame rails. Color matched paint.

This was my spray blocker, its obviously on blue paper with a thin coat of the beige on it.. but you can see it appears to match very well.
Image

Sprayed some etching primer on the roof to get ready for color and then I'll have the window installed.

Draker:

Since you already have the engine out.
Man if you can get that engine area completely clean.
You should!
You already have it out.
If you clean it now and then wait a day to paint it after wiping it down with acetone.
It will hold up longer and you will have a better chance at stopping rust for the next 40 years.
When I did mine I remove everything but the engine. Then wrapped it with a big roll of saran-wrap.

Loose a day or two and do it right.
You will be much happier in the long run.
You know they say, a little bit of prepping goes a long way.
Hope you take a little bit more of time to do it right.

L8ter!

Now is not the time. I completely agree with you though! I just can't get too side tracked at the moment. The engine takes so little time to remove that I'll have to put this on the back burner. There isn't any rust in the engine bay that I haven't treated. To get this car moving and safe to keep outside, it's going to take a bit of surface rust repair on the body. I need this engine back in and running so I can focus on weather proofing it. Plus, when I respray the engine bay it will be with some paint that has a hardener mixed in.

I haven't been able to get out the garage much. Hopefully I'll get some time this week to get things going again. I can't wait to get the engine back in the car!!

:D

Haven't checked your progress lately. Sucks about the mani shenanigans, but at least it was fixable!
