My radiator is freshly professionally hot tanked/cleaned.

New pump. New thermostat w/jiggle valve removed. New upper hose.

I'm going to go out and drain it and fill with a fresh 50/50 mix.

Regardless, it got me here. It will get me home.
Had my wife not been 2 1/2 hours behind our scheduled departure I might have faired a bit better.

The hotter it is, the hotter mine runs, especially on the hiway, once I leave the hiway my temp goes up to 2/3rds of the gauge and will not drop because of all the signals on Mill Plain on my way home.
Normally it runs right around the half way mark everywhere, but it is hot out right now!!!

Ever since we replaced my radiator and heater core my B runs like a champ in hot weather. I can go from washougal to downtown Vancouver going about 65mph the whole time and not hit the half way mark on the temp gauge. It's pretty fucking awesome.

Mine was in near pegged at the change from 84 to 205.
60mph to dead stop then crawl for 2 miles.

Probably ran about 60-70% on the gauge while driving 65-75 on 84.

Never has it ran that hot.



I'm going to look into an e-fans when I get home. For now, like I said...she got me here, she'll get me home.

No crazy signs of a problem. Also, this is my first long trip with her.

I would say your gauge is not accurate, near pegged is boiling, it would smell funny/hot, I84 west bound before the I205 interchange is flat hiway, it should not be that hot unless you are floored, but if you have an L16, I suppose you could have been floored depending on how fast you were trying to go.

I know gauge isn't perfect but its fairly steady.

I have serious demons with my temp gauge. Have since I bought it back. I'm betting previous owner fucked with a lot of wiring under dash.

Ever IR temp gauged it?

My 510 with a 195 degree thermostat, and a 3 row radiator (PO re-cored the original), and a hot tanked block, I could rail the car as much as I wanted on hilly terrain, hitting 7k rpm in 1st/2nd/3rd gears and never went much past mid way on the gauge on 100 degree days. Also on the coldest day in January, with a high of 34, I could maintain exactly mid way on my gauge (still a 195 degree thermostat). No coolant bypass hose, no removed jiggle valve. Just that 3 row radiator (cleaned with CLR), and a fresh motor (though bored out). My gauge was as steady as a new car (which never moves once it hits operating temp).

How long does it take the gauge needle to get to running temp?
When your not worried where is the gauge needle position, half way, above, below the middle mark?

Fixing my rear suspension today when I get off work, bolting seats in then bringing the 620 tomorrow. I wish I could have made it look a little better before taking it to a show but whatever

Couple of miles to get to "normal"

Gauge normally stays straight up and down. In line with the T in WATER.

Ya know that little line on the 521 gauge that is at about 40% up the scale?
Mine likes to go about that far over the T. Does that make sense?

So between T and that imaginary mark about halfway through E is what I consider normal.

I also just replaced the V.Reg with a different one. My gauge was bouncing between normal and hot in a couple seconds time.

Since replacing V.Reg temp gauge has stayed steady.


Before my trip, against my better judgement, I drained my coolant and ran a 75/25 water/coolant mix.
Old school master tech suggested this to help bleed off heat.
I didn't really trust it, but he obviously knows more than I.
Drained that idea out of my radiator last night, filled with water, drained, filled with 50/50. We'll see.

That is strange, as if the voltage regulator isn't working properly, the temp and fuel gauges drop to empty and cold, they don't move to hot or full, at least that is how it has been for me.
The needle getting into the "E" is not good, but in the end, you cannot know how hot/accuate it is unless you check it with a temperature measuring gauge of some kind.

Before when it would show me an overheat the actual temp at housing, measured with an IR gun, was in the 180 range.

Like I said before, I have demons.
Also, my gauge shows overheat when lights are on. Drops normal instantly when lights are off.

Something is wrong with it if the gauge shows a different temp when the lights are on.
There is a wire somewhere that is not connected correctly, or one is connected to something it's not supposed to be connected to.
Did you hunt for a power wire to run a radio or something else and use the gauge power supply by mistake?
