I also drilled mine after it was together, I had the machine shop put my short block together, it was just to good of a deal and I knew it would be put together correctly.

Building this motor is great!!
I enjoy the shit out of building an engine from the first bolt to every blue towel that gets used it fun to me.
Its not my job however. I guess I can see why some guys don't like their jobs. Ha.
I've gotta get my head studs also my head bolt threads are okay just lots of stuff built up in the bottom of the threads, I was cleaning them but gotta keep at it.

Bottoming tap. A tap that does not have a taper to it. And compressed air.

you know what i found easy?
I spray some brake cleaner in there. let it set over night ( i filled it to the top.) came out the next day and shot it with compressed air. Then chased a bolt down there just to be sure. they all went to the bottom without dragging or hanging on anything. A tap works, also i found a wire brush for a drill that is super ass small. FIts down in the holes nicely... Many methods! But anyways... the brake cleaner de-stickies it, least for me. then the shot of air in there just blew the shit right out!
just a regular ol air tool worked for me....

also i dip my finger in oil and run it around the head bolts lightly. the bolts go in smoothly, sometimes when they are super dry, or get wire wheel cleaned... they tend to catch or drag even if theres no gunk in there. always makes for a smooth spin.

Yeah I need to dig out the air compressor is all, didn't get to it today.
Crazy how much shit can build up in the threads.

word. also... Dmike has a good trick. Take a spare head bolt. grind it at an angle, then put a dab of grease where you ground it. run it down there and back out, basically makes all the shit stick to the grease
Can't wait to see progress tomorrow!

This is just my opinion, but if your using an ARP stud kit for the head, just chase the threads with a tap and call it good, if the studs have a little drag when they get near the bottom of the hole I would say that was good, they will stay there if you have to remove the nuts at a later date.
If you are using the stock headbolts, then take every avenue to help the bolts go smoothly into the holes when torquing them down.
I chased every hole in the block including the main bolts that were to be torqued down on my diesel engine, that engine I put together every part except the sleeves and soft plugs, and the wrist pins, the machine shop did them.

So I've gotta thank flatcat again for tthe help with the holes.
Wouldn't have done it.
Having the right tools really helps ha..
So here we go!
And then here we sit..
Waiting to be put together with lube and piston rings..
So I'll order them tonight. The head gasket and head studs will have to wait a little while.
......Edited....Oh I also need a L transmisson front case still. Anyone?????

And only broke 2 drill bits. Both easily salvageable.
I win!
