Ok, homework done wrong.

Driveshafts.

I knew this the whole time, but I have also heard differently in person over the years.

Sedan driveshaft in a wagon works with the 71B known as the Long tail trannys, but it is a tad short.

It does not work directly with a 71C Car tranny, (KA,SR,VG, CA).


All bolted up, and jammed all the way into the CA's transmission, the motor wants to be about 1 inch forward of the crossmember.

That will not do. So I need to take some out...

But even at current, there is almost enough room for the clutch fan! An inch back would provide plenty!

So I did some research, decided to just cut the driveshaft myself. Aligned it, threw it back in the car, spun it checking for runout, got it nearly perfect, welded it. Ill balance it once I get it on the road.

To show what my problem was, motor mount a bit off (other side was worse).


Then current back of motor to firewall clearance:


Fan to Radiator clearance, or lack thereof:


And the motor where it should be!

Started on the transmission mount. Should finish up tomorrow. Also cut a giant hole for the shifter. I wanted to shove the transmission high. Pictures, I forgot, tomorrow.

Its been a week... Um I did a few things.

First off, I made a transmission mount. Just need to grind it down now.



Then I started on my intercooler. Cut the elbows I ordered, and the ends of the intercooler. Then had Draynor weld it up for me.







Then I disassembled my head. All laid out:



And I got to use my new valve retainer removal tool today! Had to file it down a bit though.

I also picked up a S13 SR20DET MAF. Definitely need to chip the CA's ecu now.

Hurt hand, not feeling like too much wrenching. So instead planning out other things. Just ordered a EPROM programmer, 28 Pin ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) socket, and a solder sucker (some how I have never had one of these).

Need to order a few chips, and then I try dabbling with that stuff. First up will be editing the voltage range for the MAF so it will work right with the SR MAF.

Im just not quite feeling like doing a stand alone right now. Down the road I am actually thinking of going with Nistune (which is based in Australia, land of the CA18DET it would seem like). Although deleting the MAF entirely would be nice.

Started to put the head back together, cleaned out the gunk on the intake valves/ports. New valve stem seals.

This tool makes things nice/fast.

On the left is a new chip, in this case its a 512k eeprom, stock is a 128k eprom. Ill get more into this later.


And here is the chip inserted into the ZIF socket. ZIF=Zero Insertion Force. A little arm tightens the chip into the socket, as well as releases it.

Are there tunes out there you can burn into that? Or do you have buy them and burn em?

Plenty out there, and its all pretty easy to modify yourself with some software.

I havent gone down that road yet, but Ill report back with the findings.

FYI I dont like paying people to do something I can.

I hear that! I wasn't sure what was floating around. This is all common with the Z32 also.. but mine is all stock and I haven't went down that road either.
