I was able to find the front cover gasket set locally with front crank seal. It's the last part I needed (I think) to drop this engine back in the bay. Trying to round everything up so that I can get to work on it during Thanksgiving break.

A MIG cart... is a MIG cart *said in an old Italian mobster voice*
Sweet ! +1 for thanksgiving break + 510 + being able to work on.
good you got your seals.
I've got to finish getting gas , brake clean , gasket scrapper blade refills , etc ... for when he#$ freezes over.

Oh I see.
The bottom two .. is there enough "surface" that you can get a nut slipped over the top + weld carefully + heat the bisch up/let cool/heat up/let cool/heat up then wrench out ? ( pretty sure you've thought of that already lol ). It all seems a bit risky now I type it out :-/ ... possibly that much more work if it goes wrong ... it is the exhaust manifold after all
I think the cheapy left hand drill bits were $8 ? last (2) sets at Harbor Freight. EDIT: ah yeah ok they're $10 a set regular now.
Honestly I just prefer to use right hand bits first then towards --> left hand , but I'm sure not a pro so not sure how it's done
I have broken off extractors in snapped flush head-bolts before ... that wasn't fun lol.
Ever since then have been trying to avoid them.
Maybe I was doing something wrong.

I have been drilling with regular drill bits. I've got one drilled through and the other is drilled half way. I thought about welding something on but the metal is soft.. it would likely just snap again. It's strange. I also tried putting vise grips on and turning, but they kind of pealed away..

If you have enough metal to grab onto them with vise grips you need to heat the metal around the bolt till it is glowing orange, then hit the metal on the side near the bolt with a hammer, then just turn it out, it is easy when done this way, never failed me so far, and the threads are intact, I repeat, it has never failed me before.
If there isn't enough to grab with vice grips, then I drill.
I have never tried drilling a small hole for an easy out, then heating it up, hitting the side, then turning it out with the easy out, I wonder if it would work?

Yeah, I tried heating it. Unfortunately all I have is a little propane torch and the heat dissipates too quickly through the manifold and I can't get it red hot. If I had enough heat, it would work I'm sure!

MAP gas cylinders at home depot. They burn hotter mucho better-o than propane. You "might" have to buy the auto-ignite head as well to run them , and maybe you can use the regular heads. I'm really not sure. Auto-ignite is nice though. Of course than there's the bigger torches and better gas lolz. no time for those we have datsuns to build !

I just looked those up. Definitely looks better than my setup. I can say for sure I've got some metal red hot and broke free a bunch of stuck bolts with just my little torch. Cost.... less than $10 I think.. lol. Good stuff.
For these 3 bolts.. I'll just drill them. At some point a big torch would kick ass!!!

Right on !!! that's exactly what I would do !!
I don't blame you on the cost $10 is a good way to go if it'll do the job !!!
At some point indeed a big torch would be kickass heheheh ....

Got to spend a few hours in the garage today. I got the engine on a stand to do some work.
I think I found the oil leak. Anyone?
I'm was going to scrape all the grime off and do a deep clean.... only problem is I forgot to buy the brake kleen...
I got a bit of it scraped off and then garage time was over.

Also.. Is there a market for this air pump shit? Does everyone just throw it away?

Everyone throws it away. Maybe you can sell it to someone in California.

Here is a hint as to where the oil might be coming from.

my guess is the valve cover gasket. The front leading edge looks clean from oil drooling down the front.
I could be interested in the air pump. Can you post a few pic's so I can compare it to my 78 620 pump.
I'm looking for a spare incase mine takes a dump.

years and years of neglect.
Funny part is, you can pull the radiator, then the pulley, and replace the seal. Just use a couple sheet metal screws to screw into the seal, then pull it out.
Draker. Be sure and use Syl-Glide from napa auto parts on the inside of the new front timing cover gasket. Put a good amount around the inside where the crank will be spinning on the seal. Do the same for the rear main. Bish will nevar leak in your life time. Micromachinery passed that info to me. its amazing stuff. About 6 bucks for a tube and enough to do 100 datsuns at least.

That's a good tip. I usually lube them but not with silicone lube.

Yeah, crank shaft seal. Probably original... and been failing for a while.
