Had the boy pull the truck into the driveway today because he has been hounding me constantly about swapping out rims. Well I finally went to the storage shed and brought out the shiney. I wanted him to have better tires than what was on there so, the old chromie rallys live again.

Seems like not that long ago I was helping my dad work on cars and stuff.
The tires that we took off were 225/60/14
It now has 195/75/14 up front
205/75/14 in back

Ok, battery must be really dead, now is getting some juice. So, I switched batteries in the trucks and sent them home with the good bat from 521. Check alt in KC when I got home, its magnetized on the back and when disconnect bat terminal truck stays running.
Soooooooo, nothing but a bad case of old dirty connections. I noticed when it was running, small blue sparks were dancing around the positive terminal. Cleaned it up with a rag and tightened down a little but and they went away.
Soooooooo, gonna teach the boy about the charging system tomorrow and how important clean tight connections are. Going to get a battery terminal brush and have him clean them up.
At least it waited for me to get home before acting up!

So, I have been a little lazy the past few days. Gimme a break, those beers are really cold and the recliner is really comfy.
Anyways, told David to bring up his truck to the driveway and we will dink around with the battery and stuff. Well, he comes in and says its totally dead, no lights no nuttin.
Siiiighhhhhhh......My first thought was that there must be some sort of drain on the battery even though everything is shut off. I had visions of going thru the electrical and trying to find a short or some shit. I hate electrical.
Went out there and showed him how to clean the terminals and got them all shiny. Tightened down the cables nice and snug and BAM! She fired right up.
Sooooo.....then got her all warmed up for some night driving.
Got the new headlights all adjusted and dam, they are just simple halogens but made a helluva difference!
I have a couple of questions about a few simple issues.
The electric choke on the weber works just fine buuuutttttt, it likes to stick at hi idle for the 1st few miles of a trip. Typical shit right? Is there a fix to that? Is it the throttle cable need to be lubed or is it something I can do on the choke itself? I don't know cuz 521 haz manual choke.
It didn't do it tonight but, it likes to diesel. Is that a minor timing issue or something in the carb? Nothing terrible just annoying.
Other than that, I am pretty jelly of this truck. L20 + weber + peanut head + 5 spd + 4.11s = pure sex to me. Can't wait to get the L20 dropped into the 521. It will be pretty much the same except 389s.

The only time I had a dieseling problem it was remedied by running high octane gas. I'm sure there is some way to adjust the timing to get rid of it although I couldn't tell you how. It's been so long since I've had a running l20 with a weber that I can't hardly remember shit about how I fixed problems with it.

There are a couple reasons for a motor to "diesel", but the first thing I go for is carbon build-up.
If your motor is tired, or running rich, you will get carbon build-up from unburnt fuel in the combustion chamber. An easy was to clean that off is - 1) remove the air cleaner 2) run the motor to get it warm, hot is okay too 3) slowly trickle water down the carb at a high idle ... it's important to use few little water at a time, because it needs to vaporize to do it's work ... also, you can't compress water so dumping too much in at once will most likely break something. It's better to take your time and pour water in slowly, than to take risks trying to do this too quickly.
Like I said, there are a number of reasons. Carbon build-up is common, and it's cheap and easy to deal with. If it works you're good to go, if it doesn't then we need more information to figure it out.

well the bottom end is original as far as I know. The head is reconditioned. its not tired by any means.

That's good, then most likely the carbon build-up is not from burning oil.
I like to start with cleaning up the build-up before trying to do much else in these cases. If you're not sure you have carbon build-up, look at a plug. If your carb isn't dialed in well, like it's running rich, you'll get some build-up in here - cheap gas does it too.
Once you shut off the ignition the motor should stop running, if it doesn't - then the most likely the heat stored in the carbon build-up is causing the "dieseling". Fuel injected motors don't do this because the injectors won't open to provide fuel. A carb will allow fuel to enter the intake, even when there is no spark. Good Luck - I hope this helps!

My work truck has always dieseled, it would run for a long time, sometimes a minute, then I heard it was bad for it, so I got used to just leaving it in gear, stepping on the brake, letting out the clutch, and turning off the key at the same time, no more dieseling issues.
I have dual SUs and electronic ignition, I set it up for driving, not for shutting it off.
I have not even thought about this issue in a long time, seems like the lower the idle, the less likely it would diesel, mine is at 750rpms at idle now, but when I was having the issues, it was idling closer to 1000rpms, I have gotten better at tuning them, or they are just tuning themselves now, they are over 15 years old now without any work/maintenance done to them other than adding fluid to the top of them.

Tinkering around with the truck today.
Got he carb adjusted pretty good. Idle and mixture. Pretty smooth now.
Cleaned air filter.
Started messing around with some electrical stuff. Just seeing if I could fix any of these gauge issues by cleaning and tightening stuff.
So here is what I have.
E brake light works normal.
Charge light works normal.
Hi beam light works normal.
The oil light does work normal.....somwtimes.SO that may be a dirty connection cuz there is a oil leak down by the sensor. I am hoping its that simple.
Temp gauge no worky at all. When we picked her up I bought and we installed new temp sender. Still nada. Its getting power to the sender. So that may be in the gauge cluster? On the back of it?
Thats where the gas gauge sits no matter what is in the tank. Its at least half right now. I haven't run it completely empty to see if it does actually move when it gets below that point.
Could that be the float messed up? Would I have to drop tank to fix?
I can go the easy route and get a 3 gauge kit thingy for the oil and temp but I want the original shit to work for my son.
I do have a complete gauge cluster from a 74 I do believe. Is that interchangeable with this one being a 79?Or is there any parts I can take off and use? Like the voltage reg if that's bad?
