New World Datsuns...

So.... the serpentine belt.
I had purchased (2) of them (one for a back up as I found one I "thought" I liked better).
Apparently both were .6 inches to short of the actual one I needed.... except.... the part numbers check out
Bro ordered one up , came out , whipped another new one on in about 1-minute at most from the top.
I was shocked... I'm only out a couple of clams , but very happy that was all the problem "was".

Engine runs really well still as of today.
I leaned in and broke a vacuum elbow line off the air-box , and replaced that. Doh !
Vacuum tree seems to be in good shape.
Engine power is GREAT/smooth.
Drives well.
No smoke and plenty of exhaust flow.

Transmission shifted good in "economy" mode. Haven't tried "sport" or "winter" mode yet.
Car drives really quite well.
Passengers cv joint has a very very.. light clunk on one or two left turns (this is the big long cv-joint with the bearing bolted to the engine btw lol).
All signals work well , brake lights , radio code is plugged in working , etc.

Check engine light is on as of the moment , but I had several things going back + forth when starting/running the car.
Will probably read , and clear/cycle/drive here soon.
Obviously has to get through DEQ.

I just let it sit and idle for a bit while checking on it.
Raised the rpms here or there (1,500 or so).
Engine temp was very steady.
Lifters were all very quiet , and can/could only really here the injectors operating .

Good job man! That is amazing work. Engine bay is nice and clean too. I heard/saw the video. Looks tits! I'm sure once you clear the engine codes things will come together for the light. Could be a bad or retarded sensor somewhere that needs replacing too. Never know with used engines.

L16/18/20. Real easy. You have oil sensor and water sensor. That's it both are super easy to get to. This motor probably has more sensors than a vagina.

I'll make no bones while being humble.. this engine replacement was a bit of work for myself. (wasn't hard well designed.. just took time)
Had I used air-tools , and ALL of the correct tools (had most needed)
I'm sure it would have gone faster (how much I don't know as I'm generally slow... lol)

Never know with used engines on anything or eberything ( I was slightly worried on this one ).
I was a bit anxious to get it done this last week ... so I could stay inside the 60-day warranty ... and yard it out to return for exchange if need be
.... since it apparently takes me about 30-days to get one in

Hopefully it's something dumb like ya say or just needed to be cleared.
I found some hoses that had some vacuum leaks or would have started to that have been replaced since this engine was plopped in.
Two of them seemed like they 'should' have been leaking (split but connected/dead from age/heat/gets warm in there) , but who really knows ya know !?
Can't find my CHEAP code reader , and will look again tonight ( May have loaned it out .. doh ! ).

Yeah ! I had thought exactly the same on there being a minimum 96.7 sensors on it.
I have no clue how many are on the car (not to bad on the engine itself really)

Fired it up this morning.
Mostly wanted to try out "Sport" mode for the transmission.
Took it around the block before having to leave.
She's a winner ... shifts firm/harder ... than "Economy" mode in "Sport".
I quite like "Sport" I have no idea if it's harder on the transmission or easier on it to be honest. This is why I'm not a pro lol.
Only pushed on it once for a few seconds to make sure the transmission would kick down/shift higher rpms which checked out a good clean bill of health.
(I don't prefer to do that for no reason , but will if I need to).
I didn't think to try out "Winter" mode , but not concerned about it at all more of a curiosity of the transmission/modes.

One of these passed my house last night while I was outside. Same color too. First thing I thought was you took an epic road trip.

New regulator is set at 14.1. At idle warmed up this cheap multi-meter says 14.0. (with everything on/going = 13.8-13.9... I'd say that's good even though not a load test)

Codes came back as (cheapy reader)[/u]
- SAS (secondary air system = electric air pump , air valve , hoses , etc )
- #5 injector connector - my fault as I thought it wasn't on all the way , took off really quickly , and put back on.
- MAF - my fault again. Switched MAF's to test the spare.

Only drove it 11 miles since fixing/reading. Check engine light isn't on right now , but have to do drive cycle first lol.
Only have 3 readiness codes ready rest are inconclusive obviously.

Rotated tires , checked fluids again , and gave her one more bath with wax. Been enjoying driving her around town mostly. Smooth as things get really all around running/driving. DRIVEN I really do like this car quite a bit like you were saying . Not a lot of power but I knew that was the case going in . I like to be able to haul things/people. Took her on the highway this evening , and finally got a code in the reader. Secondary Air System (SAS) aka electric smog/air pump. Odd enough as I can hear it spooling/spinning up smoothly from a cold-start. A new one is $440. A re-manufactured is $160 ? (apparently people have rebuilt their own pumps) Also a new air-valve off the engine is $100. To keep in check I haven't replaced the O2's either at this point nor do I see any receipts for the work done. IPD and another gent apparently were able to bypass the whole fiasco problem using a diode soldered into the ECU. For less than $20 ? I will probably be going that route. Will snag another ECU for $30-$55 if I fail which seems a bit on the hard side to do.

yep, bypassing with a resistor sounds like the avenue I would take. Just delete the crap, and let the computer think otherwise. Like when you remove the cat on a OBD II car, trick the computer into thinking the second O2 sensor is reading as if there was a cat.

Long story short = it passed emissions testing today (DEQ for Canadians ). Was going to drop by Radioshack for the diode/resistor , but drove into DEQ instead while they were open.

LOVE........ this V7O.

EDIT: Just in case anyone was curious. My Code(s) so far are just the P0410 (Secondary Air Injection system). Cleared it a couple of times and it came back reasonably quick after mixed driving. Check idiot light hasn't come on yet since the engine was put in/started though . Meh. Will fix that problem fairly soon likely by the bypass spoken of earlier.

Getting food. Check engine light FINALLY came on today.... perfect timing after passing DEQ

Thats how my 2001 Jetta is. Reset the codes, double check 6 of the 8 tests say pass. Pass DEQ, light comes on driving home from DEQ. Its issue, the Second o2 sensor is way too sensitive. A new 02 wont fix it, as the issue is in the ECU. Better to just do a cat delete.

Oh I didn't realize Jetta's had that issue. It's been years ! since I worked on one. Good to know.

-Seafoamed intake + gas tank (not oil !). Glad I did.
-Replaced some tiny vacuum line that I had been procrastinating about.
-Cleaned out the Idle Air Control Valve. Works great.
-Un-plugged smog pump for now until I bypass it. Capped off hose and air-intake box.

-----------------TO DO-----------------------
- P side CV Joint and seal.
- Order/replace Fuel Pump Relay (don't need to same reason as fuel pump)
- Order/replace Fuel Pump (don't need to , but can't get caught breaking down in the middle of nowhere with no reception or just getting to work)
- Change tranny fluid carefully. (looks fine for now or even a bit just trying to keep up on some of my maintenance)
- Lubricate sun-roof rails/guides with white lithium ? (will have to read what I need).
- Get A/C turned back on.

^^^ After that it's done to my satisfaction. Just wash , wax , change oil , rotate tires , and easy things of that nature.

This car has been real pleasurable.

For "educational" purposes *only*. Popped open a *not in use * ECU , and soldered the diode for the (secondary air system) into ECU bands ... (probably the best soldering job I've ever done ) From what I can can speculate... work well .. too well.

-Wiped out sun-roof rails , and sprayed in some white lithium (picked up a couple days ago).
-Put in cheap BWD/Niehoff plug wires on.
-Air Mass was acting up(tested , suspected , and confirmed even though no codes). Ordered New , and popped it on = problem solved.

-That "educational only purposed ECM" with the diode only works great by the way and no secondary air system check engine code after 100-miles (more than enough for it to come on since half of that is highway).

-Fuel pump is done. Very pleased with this pump all around. A bit louder than factory (which is quiet). Have to get out of the car , walk to the passengers side rear tire , squat down , and listen to hear it. Pump that came out was the Bosch factory unit. Not sure if the original one with the car , but it's a small piece of mind to pay peanuts (comparatively) to not have your fuel pump die in the middle of the road/highway/out of town trip/way to work.
-Fuel Filter will be done tomorrow after work or something. That will be quick and easy.
-A/C ... having the code cleared tomorrow , and topped off if need be or diagnosed for the leak if needed lol. I do 'believe' the pump and clutch are both good.
-Transmission fluid ... will try to get done in the next week , but likely next two weeks. Just bought the fluid for it tonight. My head was spinning after reading with what was best for the buck. Grabbed 12qts of this stuff for $60 total (was better than buying house brand at $54 for the same amount) *shrugs shoulders*. The last ATF fluid change service was 40K ago. It's an Aisin 4-speed transmission. Says Dexron III is good to go on the back of the bottle even though it says LV on the front (probably like all superseding fluids/parts or umbrella coverall). I 'believe' this trans has been serviced relatively right along the course of it's life , so hopefully there won't be too much of a shock to the system if I change it all at once (balancing whether I'll change a few quarts at a time instead still lol)

I've always gotten along with Valvoline products in general.
Very clean engines when opened up , and lower oil consumption (yet like everyone else they'll be bought out and change their formula's here or there)
Exception is I don't buy the "White" bottle motor oil anymore (nothing wrong with it at all just max-life came along and noticed better effects).


As much as I enjoy the satisfaction getting this up to par I'd truly rather be tinkering on my Datsun's again here soon , and just float around in this.

We pour a LOT of Maxlife where I work. Seems to be good stuff.

Jeez dude. lol. very good documentary. There is enough info in here for volvo drivers to fix their cars lol
