Continuing the tradition '79 KC

The gauges in my 510 were similar when I got it. Chased senders and wiring for awhile with no luck. Finally found this...

The connector was melted too. I actually repaired and bypassed (See the wire under the bulb sockets?) some pins for a while and got everything to work. Eventually went with a full set of aftermarket gauges. Could have spliced in a new connector and replaced the cluster and been fine though. Sorry, I don't know enough about 620s to tell you if a '74 and '79 are interchangeable.

from what I've read, you should be able to take the power wire for the oil ( at the sending unit) and gas gauge ( wire at the gas tank ) and ground them. When you ground them it will peg the fuel gauge to full and the oil to the high pressure side of the gauge. If that doesn't happen, then the gauge is not working proper. But before you try replacing any of the gauges, clean all the terminals to make sure there getting a good contact.


as for the 74 620 dash cluster to the late 620's. There is some differant's to the faces of the gauges but I would think the fuel and oil gauge will be the same.

Yeah I know the gauges are slightly different. Wasn't sure about the connections on the back and what not.
The oil sender could be bad as well. The one on the 521 was and I just went with manual psi gauge on it.
Just mainly interested in the temp and fuel getting to work.

Yup, he's right. The sender is just a variable resistor on the ground side. Just ground the wire at the sender and it should peg the gauge if it's working.

Also, if the float is stuck you can take a piece of hose pipe (I think y'all call them garden hoses up north) and run it down the filler neck and jostle it around a bit. Maybe it'll dislodge the float.

Stereo install time!

Got a decent Pioneer deck plus 4 speakers. 2 6s and couple 6x9s. Nothing fancy, if he wants something more then he will have to buy it himself.

Didn't want to hack up the dash cuz its a pain in the ass and I didn't want to hack up the dash. Soooooo.....

Started with this



Popped out the delete plate. I learned something new today.



Did some cutting.



Test fit the cage



BAM!! Perfect fit.



Oh and I haz delete plate for the hole in dash from old stereo.



Final install in truck will be tomorrow. Fingers getting cold and my beer and recliner are looking mighty comfy.
I need to go up to stereo shop and get some spacers for the kick panel speakers. Also will get some boxes for the 6x9s in the back.

Toss in temp and oil psi gauge.
Fix or replace cig lighter
Oil change
spare tire
Take the box off of 521 and throw on 620...it has all my tools and shit
Extra alt, fuel pump. water pump
Put new wipers on it
I may go to junkyard and see about a couple new bucket seats cuz moar comfy.

Got oil psi gauge hooked up!

If the gauge can be trusted, about 17 psi hot and at cruising speed it is 38-40 psi hot. If its all original on the bottom end that's not too bad in my book. Actually I stomped the fuck out of it pulling into traffic and it jumped to 45 at higher rpms.



Tomorrow I will do temp and volt gauges and get all the lights working. Need to go get the correct size adapter for the temp sender.

Stereo sounds awesome with 6x9s in the back!! Just need to throw in the satellite radio now.



Oil psi. C heck. Volts. A shade over 14 at cruising speed. Check



Cant find a fucking adapter fitting for the temp gauge sensor. Went to 3 different places. I guess I will have to fix the electrical bug in the system. Guess I just got lucky with the one on Viagra.
Going to fix cig lighter next and start packing her up.

Have an issue now. Kinda minor. She likes to cough and sputter about 2500 to 3000 rpm under load. Climbing hill accelerating etc. Anything over that she runs like a raped ape.
Changed filter. It was full of black flakey shit. Still doing it. No backfire or anything. Just sputter. 70+ and we perfect just humming along.

Shitty Fuckin gas. Last tank must have been half water. We running great now and no sputter. Ran the tank dry and it's only the 11 gallon. I thought it was the 17 cuz i put 12 in it in Lewiston. Oh well now I know. Fuel mpg on that last tank was 20. I been getting 25. In billings 5 hrs or so to go
