Progress progress PROGRESS!!! :D I know how you feel. I'm hoping this weekend will be better for the wagon axle. I'd really really love to get some drive time in before it snows.

Not gonna lie, progress hasn't been much. But I did actually get under the car yesterday, and I even tacked a couple things together... Its gonna be a pain....

Im talking Oil Pan.

Oil pan isn't that bad. Just get it clean before you weld, then hit it with dish soap and a brush to make bubbles, hit it with air or turn it upside and put water in it, see if it bubbles or gets wet.

No, I mean, actually fabricating it. As I have to make clearance for the crossmember and rack. And I cant lift the engine high enough in car to squeeze the pan in and out. So that means a lot of lowering the rack.... which the engine is bolted to.. Fun times ahead.

And Yes, the real answer is to do this out of the car, but I dont have a engine lift right now.

You can do what I did. Get an overhead support bar for fwd engines. Works for rwd too, just have to make sure it doesn't walk down the fender edges. That way the engine can hang suspended and you can remove the crossmember. It's a shame you're not in Spokane, I have both I'd let you borrow.

You mean like the one I had holding the engine while I remade the crossmember?

Well I redid that too.

Grabbed some of those super long nuts, in the 1/2" variety. And drilled out the threads. So nice to have this Drill press for this, The hand drill kept kicking.

Support bar modified. Here it is actually holding the weight of the engine, it flexes a bit much, probably will weld a piece of angle steel on top...

A look down one side. I can almost lift the motor with just my hand turning the nut... Also notice how nice the U-joint angles are for the steering.

Something like this?

At this point I cut my pan... and I messed up. off like 3 degrees. Its bad. Recoverable but bad...

But then today I managed to snag another CA18 block from a friend, and I inverted that. So now I can build on that and around my crossmember.

So I promptly removed the Oil Pump, because the oil pan bolts to it and so does the pickup tube. This should makes things easier.

Image

I get some new magnetic holders tomorrow... So probably actually trying to finish this pan in a day or 2, providing I actually go to bed on time. LIke right now, like its 11:15pm, I should be in bed, I wake up at 5am, but I am at my computer.

I know what I want, but its so hard to just make it...

Well I think I figured out how I want it to look.

Now I need to clean up everything before welding. And then I need to plan the baffles/trap doors. And after I get the pan done, I get to do the pickup tube!

Nice! I just got my driveshaft hoop from Summit. I was going to build one out of steel and realized for 27 bucks, the multi fit kit would be a lot easier to make work and take me much less time. Should be pretty easy to get where I want it.

Dude, seriously? Are you in jail? I'm sure we can sell some Datsun parts to provide bail money.

Oh, that oil pan idea failed a little after that. Im not sure what photos I have. But I still dont have a complete oil pan, surprise surprise.

Here I had added the trap doors for the sides.

Image

And shortly after I decided I hated the whole thing, and that it would be impossible to drain all the oil ever. So I scrapped it (actually its next to me as I dragged it up to my computer to get inspiration off of. I have actually redesigned it, and even got lazy and sent it out for laser cutting. I even have the parts, just havent put in the time to assemble it.

I did remake my engine mount towers. Gave a bit more room for the bushing, as well as opened the hole the sleeve goes through to have some adjustment, It seemed I was really close, but just a bit bindy when I had dropped the engine in.

Any more progress? It's a rainy weekend here, I'm dragging the truck to the work shop to finish some stuff on it.
