RedBanner's To Blame For This. . . :)

Imagine buying a yellow 620, something cheap, and something for the wife to drive to work. But she's a little cautious, yet curious of the little truck. So, we head off to a remote part of the Vancouver Mall parking lot, and as we change drivers a little green Datsun 1200 (I think it was a 1200) pulls along side and offers help. . . I'm married with children. . . I'm beyond help! But it was great to know, there is a resource and a group out there that is supporting the little ole Datsun's and their owners. This is the message I sent to RedBanner after he gave me the URL to this website, and after I joined up. . . . He suggested I post it in the open forum! So. . . It's his fault! Oh! And it's nice to meet you Guys too!

----------------------------

Hey, thanks again for the stop by. . . I have a feeling that i may have found my oil leak. . . Found nothing on the starter/passenger side, but the smoke billows at shutdown around the carb/driver side, so I'm guesstimating a rocker arm cover leak on the carb side. Who knows for sure until I get in it.

I bought the thing a week ago today on Monday Aug12th in Beaverton for $350.00, it had been parked since November. So, I took it to Les Schwab to make sure the brakes were safe to drive down the Sylvan hills and we got it home Wednesday evening. We took the ugly-ass camper shell off yesterday, and the push/grill guard is coming off soon too. But before I go to far, I've gotta make sure that oil leak is solved!

The wife won't drive a stick, so finding this as an automatic was great! It runs pretty doggone well considering it's 36 years old! Dad had a 76 620 longbed 4speed that I learned to drive a stick in. I had a red 78 620 in high school that was an automatic. Bought it in 1979 and sold it in 1982. The second 620 I got was another 78, purchased in 1984 and lost due to theft in late 85 or early 86. It too was yellow, but was a 5 speed. Very fond memories of all three of those trucks!

I'm planning on making this my toy as well as her daily driver to work. . . From Vancouver to Emanuel Hospital is about 15 miles one way. Our Cherokee gets about 15mpg. So once I have this thing solidified (i.e. fix the vacuum leak in the brake booster, fix oil leak, change hoses and thermostat, get a new belt installed, get the grill guard gone, get the bulbs changed that are non-op, get the window washer working again, AND find out why the speedometer is non-op) then she can drive it and save us some money on gas! What you saw was her driving it in the Vancouver Mall parking lot for the first time. Like I said, she's used to driving a Jeep Cherokee. . . She thought it was fun!

See? There is hope for female-kind afterall! :)

Nice meeting you RedBanner! I hope this truck doesn't end up being a pile!

You wouldn't be the first.

Banner is to blame for a lot of things around here.

Welcome to NWD! Glad to have you around.

I have a question, I've got an oil leak, I think from the valve cover, I've got the new gasket for it, but no where in my Chilton or Haines does it give me a listed torque for those bolts. To loose, and they leak. Too tight, and they leak. . . It's a 1977 620 with an L20B.

According to the Felpro packaging. . . 30 lbs. Just in case anyone besides me wanted to know.

I only use a torque wrench for head gaskets and wheels.

Snug is snug.
Loose parts fall off.

www.olddatsuns.com will be an excellent resource for you.

Redbanner (adam) is a good guy. Beyond a kick ass friend, he knows a thing or two about datsuns, too. Hang around him a few times and your sides will hurt from laughing. Dude's a riot!

Valve cover gasket is easy enough to replace. Just think, they normally only start leaking once :troll:

Just go around tightening the bolts 5 times in a row. Youll notice that after tightening, others will seem loose.

Being that they are M6x1.0 threads, torque level is minimal. Like 9-12 ish.

Banner is one of the greatest Datsun people around, aside from being a great guy.

The title, coincidentally, is so fitting given "RedBanner Made Me Do It."

30 ft. lbs seems like way too much torque into an aluminum head.

I tried doing this one. Book said 10-13 lbs for valve cover bolts. I set my torque wrench at 10lbs, and broke the first bolt. Never did it again

Only bolts I torque now are head bolts, rod bolts, crank bolts... The rest get snugged down good and have a lock washer or whatever it should have.

The cork ones are notorious for leaking, get a neoprene(I think that is what it is called)

Sorry to hear.

When tightening don't go just around tightening every bolt.
Start with the center two, one on each side.
Then cross back and forth working your way away from the last bolt tightened.
You'll end up making "x"s back and forth.
Light, even "snugness" all the way around.
Your last bolts will end up being the furthest away from each other.

I hate cork gaskets. Always have. Always have had problems.
I find with cork I end up using red gasket spray for a better seal.

You'll get there.
