traded my rusty subi for this 89 gxl it has power everything, lsd, dtss, aas, and its a 2+2 so win! the engine in it would run after you turned it over for about 5 to 10 min, but you had to stay on the throttle or it would die. so out went the 13b and now ka24de is going in.
rotary....
no rotary...
ka
ive still got to make the engine mounts and trans crossmembers, then I can flip the oilpan.

Sweet, these cars feal softish in the suspention, should have adjustable inserts ran with electric motors to a switch in the console, after you get used it its a verry awsome fealing car.
I would hold onto the 13b, and putt a bunch of atf in each housing, then crank it over without spark plugs or exaust attached.
It sounds like its carbon locked. But a quick pick of the exaust port would say for sure.
So your not adding to much weight. And it looks distributed further back.... should be more fun than stock. And way cooler than 302 swap every one does.
Depending on wich trans rx7 had stock, cant remember but know there are 2 different shift points toward 1990, the shift hole could be realy realy close to the stock shift hole..

And , since you have a kind of special model, every rx7 guy will say you have "turbo mirrors"
It had other speacial features too, some hade 4 or 6 piston disk brakes, tail lights, and the motor mounts, while questionable desighn, as you can see in the shape of the pan, move the weight further back, and lower.
Making your rx7 the best handling one of the generation.
.... tl;dr version...

Any trouble with the rack placement and the crank?

yeah this car has the dtss or sport button lol, and it has the 4 piston brakes. id like to hold onto the 13b and eventually carb it but I need some cash to work on the ka swap, so its getting sold to my buddy who plans to put it in a Miata. ill get a pic of the exhaust ports tomorrow, but yes on stock mounts( or should I say one stock mount) the block sits right on the steering rack and that's without the front cover, oil pickup, crank, crank girdle. im working on the mounts to set the engine up about 3 inches, and only one engine mount would line up the other is about 2in away from the mount. As for the trans it will line up in the stock shifter hole its actually about an inch or so shorter than the rx7 trans, im hoping to set the engine as far back against the firewall with out having it cut anything. the oil pan and pickup will have to be modified to rear sump for this tho im just using a spare block and parts I have righ now to mock everything up, then the engine from my 95 240 is going in.
pics of the block sitting on steering rack.
ill get some more pics once I set the block back in.

That 13b fuel injection is the good one. Has huge secondary ports that open under vacum, for good low end and exellent high end.
Im jelly, my faverite x car is the 84 gsl-se. Your exact 88.5-89 is a close second best. They putt every good feature they learned in the second gens into that car.
Mazda, unlike datsun, changed there cars all the time. Trying to make them better. And it worked a bunch of times.

this one has the sunroof, I wish it didn't it doesn't want to work without some persuasion. if the emissions stuff and a few other things hadn't been removed and it ran right id keep the 13b in, but its been removed and theres a lot of stuff that seemed really shittly done. Once the ka is in and running and driving I have another engine im setting up for turbo, and once its done it will go in.
heres a shot of the inside.
this really pissed me off when I found it... its getting soldered and heat shrinked soon.
I had to pull the windshield wiper, cruise, and a few other wires from the emissions harness(engine harness).
before.
after I cut out what I needed to keep. it will get cleaned up before it goes back into car.

labeled and somewhat cleaned up the wiring I had to cut out of the harness.
started cleaning out the interior, I need to get the bolts that hold the door on and get a new cluster surround the tabs for the switches are broke on mine.
rear seats whoo!!
car only has 109836 miles on it.

so here's a pic of last nights little bit of work, I finally got the alignment pin out of the block. the trans I have has one wedged In there and theres not enough of a lip to grab it, but the trans is in with the block now. hopefully if I have time tonight ill get the engine mounts made then trans crossmember, the good news is the shifter lined up perfectly in the middle of the hole.
(its being held up by a coat hanger so I couldn't push the rubber all the way down.)
this will be how much room I have, front cover and pulleys only add about 5in and I think it was about 8 from the front of block to bottom of radiator.
im going to try to use the stock air box, if I can im going to use my valve cover that has the Nissan ground off of it.

started looking at how much clearance I had between steering rack and oil pan with the engine sitting as high up as I could get it. theres not much...
bottom of front cover, where the pickup tube mounts.
front cover mounted, still plenty of room for efan once its all in.
and heres how much room I don't have lol, its only about an 1 1/2 in of space.
picked up a plate to make the engine mounts, now I have to get wire for the welder it ran out last night.
the alt wiring and plugs are the same for the rx7 and 240.
both manifolds on and still plenty of room.
turbo with manifold on.
im hoping that the end half of the 240 shaft will be the right length for me to use for the driveshaft if so ill just put the mazda diff flange on it and the 240 slip yoke. ive got to wait till I get the engine completely in before I do anything with them, but just holding the 240 end up its hella close.
240 on top, mazda on the bottom.
