Hey all, I'm new to both the world of Datsun, and car wrenching in general. I decided to buy my mechanics 510 after an unfortunate accident involving me and a hi ish speed curb incident in my 2000 Olds Alero. More about that and pics of the carnage later.

After my accident, I had a choice to make. Do I drop the 1000 dollars required to fix anything and everything suspension and drivetrain related on the front left of my car, or do I put that money down on something newer and scrap the Alero? I had mentioned to my mechanic that I wanted to get an 86 Corolla, because, well, drifting. He laughed at me and took me in his back lot and showed me this ugly ass POS (my thoughts at the time) and said this is what you need. I was very skeptical, what with the name Datsun bringing up very negative thoughts, but decided to do some research since it had 3 things I was looking for: light weight, RWD, and manual. (Hard things to find in newer cars) After perusing some burnout videos and seeing some other cool stuff on various forums, I discovered that Jay Leno Garage video of a 510. I fell in love.
I am less than a year out of taking a break from college, and was working at Dominos at the time. I decided that a 40 some odd year old car was not the best option for a mechanically inept poor person to be using for his only job, so I decided that I would have my mechanic fix the Alero, and save for the Datsun. Thankfully, my wonderful mom let me borrow her '11 Camry for deliveries, so I wouldn't have to shovel fossil fuel into the 10 mpg family suburban. A month later and 600 dollars over bid thanks to some unforeseen issues and Les Schwab deciding I needed to replace the tie rod on the right side in order to get it aligned, I had my car back.
During this time, I was sure I wanted to get that Datsun. What I really wanted for my first car before I knew better was an '89 BMW 325 iX because drifting and AWD. That was not to be, as college came and I bought my dad's Alero. But I still had that itch for something old and awesome. I have been a fan of all things American muscle, and typically I have scoffed at rice and anything without a V8. Who doesn't like the burble of a Mustang with a Roush axle back exhaust system??? Well, I bit my tounge, and bought this little 510. It really made a lot of sense. It belonged to my mechanic, it looked cool, and had a lot of the things I was looking for. Naturally, I was all gung ho and was asking my mechanic about LS swaps, 350 swaps, 2.8 z swaps, adding turbos, etc, etc. My mechanic told me to cool my jets and just drive the thing. He said he had already fixed most of the things he viewed as problems on the car, and that I should run the hell out 1.6 in it, have a ton of fun, and build up the 1.8 block he had just sent out to be remachined. I cooled my jets. Here are some pictures, including one blurry picture of it on the lift, because why not?
Discovered le wild 510 in my driveway. Wasn't expecting my mechanic to make a delivery!
Turns out it's more white then grey! Kinda wish it was still the OG pistachio green though... White primer it is.
Blurry? Why not...
And the engine bay with (acc. to Adam Leazar) a petronix style dizzy, a good coil and a good Electronic ignition system. Mechanic dropped a brand new battery in! Sweet!

I bet that thing could tell you some stories. The original shade is my favorite stock 510 color.

Alright, moar pictures coming! Some how I didn't get the pics of the trunk area to this newfangled photobucket thing, but they're in there now, as well as pictures of the l18 head and ?timing cover? Also got a rear dif that I'm going to rebuild. Don't know how or with what parts, but I've heard there's a good Subbie dif that fits right in? Going to build the hell out of the l18, bt I have no idea where to start, so I'll need ya'lls help with that. Just going to do a photo dump, I'm sure ya'll know more about what I'm posting then I do. I found the headlight chrome in the trunk, and I got pictures of the worst of the rust. It's got a fuel cell. Ready for the dump???
