Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I've been using this Dewalt 14" cut off saw, to make nicer cuts. It definitely made the firewall bends cleaner than a Sawzall would have .. The problem is it leaves a razor blade sharp edge on anything you cut. So, I sliced my thumb open a few weeks ago and haven't touched metal since. Let me ...

Same idea with the firewall.

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I originally used 1.5" square tube for rocker panels, but they looked goofy sticking out past the doors. So, these 1.5"x0.75" rockers should be flush with the doors: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/47768845561_30805d911d_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/47768854031_ae0c57fc81_c.jpg http...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

My idea is to build a "frame" around the Miata, that the 510 will be attached to. Hopefully this will make the 510 body parts strong enough and removeable (at least until the roll cage is finished) I got this harbor freight tubing roller, with SWAG offroad upgraded wings and a 1.5" square die: https...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

The problem is: even with the 510 being 4" wider than stock, there is still barely any room for structure to brace the 510 body. You can see how it's basically just door skins and a 2x2" frame that needs to be removed (if I ever want to sit in it). https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/32825428467_2aa...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

Not really an update, but this will catch everyone up to real time. I'm almost done with school for the summer, so I will have more time in a few weeks. During spring break, in March, I put the 510 part back on: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/47716453022_92dbe9ac2e_c.jpg https://live.staticflic...

Re: The "Retired" 510

I think the "proper" way to align doors is to remove the latch catcher on the pillar and use shims on the bottom of the door till everything lines up. It's not impossible by yourself, now that they are hung already.

Re: Jacob's goon build

I have a stock S13 CA18DE sitting here, with the stock front sump oil pan, if you want any measurements. If that's the stock sized pan, the motor looks pretty high. Most KA 510s seem to have the front sumps level with the crossmember, but then it's the first thing hitting the ground. My KA-710 sway ...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I started worrying about the gas that's been sitting for 1.5 years. So I drained the tank and put some fresh gas mixed with STABIL in. Then bolted everything back into the engine bay: https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4847/33520222818_4ea4b9812b_c.jpg Amazingly, it started with more than half the inter...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I wasn't planning on removing so much metal, so I started adding some structure back in:

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

Have you thought about adding to the bottom of the car? Rocker panel area? I wasn't planning on adding 510 rocker panels, but I think I need them just to add structure to the 510 body. But first, I need to remove all the Miata metal in the way: https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4870/32454557547_96462a...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

Then it was the back window frame … After 4 different attempts to modify it, I realized I couldn't fix it. And Futo-Fab was having a sale:

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

Sorry for another 6 months of no updates, but I've been busy with non-Datsun stuff. The first thing that was bugging me was the C-pillars, so I got a template off my friend's 510 and saw how much narrower mine were at the top. So, I cut mine apart (again): https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7816/4739652...

Re: Just another car I'll never finish.

I just fixed that spot on my friend's 510. There are two layers of metal in the front part of the frame rail, the thin metal is overlapping on-top of a thicker piece that goes from the bumper mounting holes to a triangle shape by the crossmember bolts. His car was worse than yours, so maybe leave th...
