Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I'm stoked with how it's sitting, but it's still raked higher in the back. Another inch lower in the back, and the bottom of the doors will be level with the ground. I just need to raise the rear parcel tray area of the 510 body. Then I can start making giant bubble flares: https://farm2.staticflick...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

The wheel above is 17x7 +50 … the wheel below is 16x8 +2 after the spacers:

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I raised the BRE flares about 3" higher than normal, and they look really good with the suspension raised:

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I plan on "body dropping" the back of the car another 1.25", when I fix the roofline, so it sits level with the Miata rocker panel seams:

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

Thanks. I always like to have a few projects going at once, so I can take a break from one. Selling the 2dr 710 made this project more of a focus and allowed me to buy the tools I need to hopefully finish it. But I still have a few other "non-car" projects going. This is the suspension at ride heigh...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I cant wait to see it sitting lower. What are you having to do to the miata tub to make the 510 metal fit? Sorry it took so long, but it's lower and here's how much I've had to cut so far. It is definitely structurally compromised: https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1774/43027022065_86375dac7e_c.jpg ht...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I sold the 2dr 710 recently and immediately bought the used Airrex Miata suspension I had been eye'ing for 8 months. Luckily they were still for sale and cheaper too: https://farm1.staticflickr.com/929/43027114455_c751e95728_c.jpg So it was time to get rid of this ride height: https://farm1.staticfl...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

That rust made the coupe roof idea seem more logical, because I cut it out completely to bend the back of the roof: https://farm1.staticflickr.com/936/43884715252_5cdab4383d_c.jpg https://farm1.staticflickr.com/930/30063921998_73203ec540_c.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1814/30063892498_41d4f868...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

The roof had a nasty rust hole, before I tried to make it look like a coupe roof:

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I didn't take many pics, but I had to remove all of the body's bracing to get it back to level, centered, and square'ish. Then I added a 1.5"x.075" square tube as rocker panels to keep the doors even both sides: https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1816/43214300554_939d3106cb_c.jpg 2dr doors are about 6" ...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I took the body back off, drilled three holes down the center line of the roof, and started trying to make the body level and even from the centerline strings: https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1814/30063919278_99818d3089_c.jpg and started hacking up the doors: https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1774/43932...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

The bigger issue was the back end looked like it was sagging down on the drivers side:

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I achieved the taller (stock-looking) windshield height I wanted, but the roof line only looked "okay" from this angle:

and it looked weird from the side:
