Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I think it looks way better now. Real coupe pillars are angled forward more, but I don't want the roof to get any shorter. A flat lower anvil for my English wheel smoothed out the pillars, and she's back off the Miata again: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49498538407_dc5b331a7b_b.jpg https://li...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I couldn't shrink the bigger side enough. So, the next attempt started with a plywood curve, but it looked weird too. The problem is a sedan window frame is more curved at the top than a coupe and it sticks out too far on a profile view. I tried mocking up the sedan frame farther forward, and it loo...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

The next 2 pillars were 18ag instead of 20ag, and I left the hammer marks in them. Then I started building the back window frame:

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

The ruined c-pillar looked good from a distance, but it wasn't fixable.

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

But I got carried away English wheeling the hammer marks and made a compound curve where there shouldn't be one:

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

Then I used the same hammer and a sandbag to curve to the flat part:

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

The first two bends were easy on my super cheap folding brake, but the reverse bend was done clamped to a table -- using a soft hammer:

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I basically finished both sides, but each pillar was 5 separate pieces of metal and had almost no patina left. So, I made a template off the best one:

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

It still didn't look 'right', so I leaned the other pillar even farther forward:

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

I started with a lightly shrunk 20ag angle at the top, to match the roof's curve:

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

Haha. Thanks everyone.

I cut off the c-pillars last month. They were never going to look 'right'. I think my mistake last time was not having all the body panels mocked up. So, this time everything is still on the Miata:

Re: Just another car I'll never finish.

I was wondering why the tops of the fenders were a different color, but that looks really clean with the hood on. Great work!

That does look good! And super clean wiring too. It looks like a sleeper now.

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

These two pieces started out as a flat angle bend... then I shrunk them both ways until they fit the shape of the window frame: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49334851553_842c303c98_c.jpg More dimples... I should have used a smaller hole saw, but all I had was the 1-1/2" one I got for the roll ...

Re: Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

Now that I had a trunk with the stock shape and curve, I could start building the widened futo-fab window frame:
