Wynona the wagon's resurrection!

AUTHOR'S NOTE: 2-20-19. IF YOU GET AN RB MOTOR OR ANY OTHER 30K JAPANESE REPLACEMENT MOTOR BUILT IN THE MID 90s, JUST EXPECT A COMPLETE REBUILD AND TEAR DOWN, OR AT LEAST A TEAR DOWN AND RE-SEAL EVERYTHING. THE OWNER OF THE MOTOR I GOT HADN'T APPARENTLY HEARD OF ANTIFREEZE. IT SEEMS TO HAVE STRAIGHT WATER RUST SLUDGE AND A LOT OF IT, NECESSITATING MANY MANY COOLANT PIPES AND HOSES AND CAVITIES TO BE CLEANED OR REPLACED DUE TO RUST CORROSION.

3-9-22, I decided to leave a better bread crumb trail. Here is the DOHC D21 thread when I first posted the pictures of the wagon when I went to look at it in the middle of the night in Spirit Lake. 104k miles when I bought it.

https://ratsun.net/topic/63955-frontier ... 24/page/4/

And here's the original build thread on Ratsun.net before Ratsun got too big with too many people and turned sour:

Well if you've been on a certain other site in the last couple years, you've no doubt seen Wynona. She's a 1984 Maxima wagoon, who up until this summer, was operating perfectly. However, due to my little head overpowering the big head, I ran it at 6000 rpm for too many minutes and hurt #6 pistons. Haven't yanked 6 out of the block yet, but I suspect to find damaged ring lands and/or cracked rings. Either way, time to rebuild.

Forgive me for no oics, I'm at work. I may gut Ugly Betty to steal her 5 speed and install in the wagon. I went to Pull and Save with Mohammed a couple weekends ago and pulled a donor 260z block and have the crank and rods up at Sunwest now. In fact, I need to call and see if he's had a chance to work me a quote. That will take care of the bottom end. The top end may receive the head off Ugly Betty, though I will probably put a little less aggressive cam in her as I'd like better idle characteristics. Plus, I won't be autocrossing the wagon, but I want her to be faster than she was.

I'll get some pictures up before too long, but there you go!

Lol, yes, that is the wagon! Thanks Indy! After my run tonight I'll find some current pics. Looks the same, minus the cylinder head. ;)

I remember you and I mobbing on the back roads from Kevin's house.

Both of us abusing the redline while the whole rest of the pack were quickly getting smaller in the mirror.

I think Kevin got some really good pics of the two of you out at his house.

We're(family) planning a trip to Spokane soon. We'll have to get together for dinner or something.

Ok, as promised, here are some oics. ;) This is the donor motor Mohammed and I yanked and I tore it apart that night.

This is the block in Wynona. #6 cylinder is not happy. I'm thinking maybe an injector failed a bit too, hard to say. They are original injectors with 110k on them. Certainly possible during my way too long at 6000 rpm stint that one decided to shit the bed. You can see slight feathering around the edge of the piston. Looks fine other than that, but the bore is scuffed. I suspect when I tear that out I'll find broken rings and or broken lands. There's a bird in here for good measure, lol.

Mostly unrelated question; What are the emissions requirements in your area? Do you have to worry about any type of visual/technical compliance or is it tailpipe only? Just curious about how creative one could get on a "modern" car.

Anything 25 years and older is smog exempt. So no check or anything. Above that, you have to go to the ecology station and run it on a dyno and a sniffometer up the tailpipe. Newer cars they just plug in, don't even run them under load. So next year, when my '93 hardbody is exempt, it could get a 1500 hp V8 and no one except the cops chasing me would know the difference. ;)

Thanks! At least the engine troubles were self-inflicted. ;) Not like the Datsun gods let me down.
