So the guy who rebuilt my trans (91-240sx) said to run 1/2 75w and 1/2 ATF.

What are your thoughts on this ??

The only thing I have found is that the GL5 is VERY BAD for the older Nissan transmissions and that they Require the GL4.

The GL5 expands to much and cause more problems. That info was found on most of the 240 forums.

So what are you thoughts and what do you run in your tranny ??

If your synchros are copper alloy (brass, phosphor bronze) they need protection from GL5 oils. I believe GL4 is around 4%s sulphur anti scuff additives. These form a slippery extremely thin molecular bond with the copper that improves wear protection. GL5 is about 6% and you may think that's only 2% more but in reality it 50% more. What happens is the bonding goes much deeper into the copper forming a much thicker crust and stress will flake this layer off, to form over and over depleting the copper. (this is very simplified and the terms may be wrong but essentially what happens)

Many say to use GL5 or other 'flavor of the month' oils but won't be around in 10 or 20 years when problems arise. Some just look at the EP (extreme pressure) properties of GL5 and figure better has to be better right? Others are simply not aware of brass synchros on older Nissan trannys. It's up to owners to be the experts on what's good for their transmissions and Nissan recommended GL4.
