Trans fluid

#1

Post by izzo » Thu Jul 25, 2013 12:04 pm

Topped off the 210 when I bought it....

GF says its acting funny, so I check the trans fluid and the dipstick is dry.. Threw some in it, had her drive it aruond a bit.... Topped it off after I got some more fluid...

Question is, where'd it go? I see no leaks anywhere. I checked the driveline input area, the trans pan seal, the lines... nothing, no drips on the ground. no wet spots (lol).

Might be a plugged modulator.

Or an un plugged modulator.... :troll:

The diaphragm could have ruptured and vacuum will then draw ATF into the intake.

The Vacuum modulator valve is located on the left side about in the middle (just above the pan) and just in front of the electric down shft solenoid. It will have a short 'rubber' hose elbow to a hard line up to the intake. Pull it off and ATF may drip out if this is the problem.

If it is have a care when removing it. There is a small rod the diaphragm pushes against inside to 'adjust' the shift points.

The coolant lines are under no great pressure and the return line just empties back into the transmission case so if it was leaking, rad pressure would more likely force coolant INTO the transmission.

Good to know, thanks mike!

Ill crawl under there tomorrow and take a gander. Napa auto parts wants 30 bucks for the part. Rock auto for the same part is 2 dollars lol. If its bad, then itll be fixed in a week..

I to notice a little smoke here and there out the tail pipe. mostly seems like condensation build up, but the gf notices smoke. So that maybe where its coming from, that or the master cylinder. but it doesn't go down fast enough to seem to cause a problem.

IDK. Guess it's just time to go thru it all

Update

Ordered the modulator. The smell when it bellows out smoke is kind of a diesel smell, and I crawled under and pulled the rubber hose like mike suggested. When I pulled it off fluid came out, not a lot but some. So it must be sucking it out then burning it off in spurts.

Module is in the mail and should be here this week. I will take care when removing it as suggested.

Our first used Ford van at work started having more and more engine oil in it. Every time I checked it, it was higher. Trans was using oil but I didn't connect this. How does it get through the engine into the pan? It was the modulator valve. Shrug.
