ignition possibilities for a 510

#1

Post by datmo » Tue Sep 10, 2013 9:54 pm

well as most of you know, the 510 ignition is not the greatest and i feel like it's unsafe.
although i have other safety mechanisms, i would rather have a new ignition since 510's can start with a screw driver.
Anyone have ideas?
Besides datsundaves. i wish he sold em still but he doesnt....

Hidden switch?

I got in a car the other day that I had to hold down the power mirror switch to enable the ignition switch.

well I'll hope a kill switch and a quick release are good enough.
I hope to get an alarm system soon.

and i don't live in the greatest area.
i know 3 people that had a 510.
2 got stolen and the third broken into.

mine will not be of these cases.

That reminds me; A guy in high school had a clean original '70 Chevelle. His dad had just given him the car. He walked into shop class and asked if we could get it to start for him. We gave it the whole run down... Turns out, there was a kill switch just behind the rocker panel under the car. With all the gravel roads around, apparently a rock had jumped up and hit the switch.

Moral is; Don't put a kill switch where it's open to the elements.

Your other option is LoJack.

Oh better yet! A window sticker that says " This car equipped with LoJack".
That way they will think it has it; (deterrent)... and if that doesn't stop them, they will waste time trying to find it, and hopefully by then, you will catch them.

Less per capita means a lot.

In my neighborhood, my neighbors watch out for my shit.

When Banner showed up, the guys across the street were giving him the stink-eye.
Them some loco mufuckers!

only some of my neighbors are cool. the others usually hate me because im that kid that always has friends over and is super fucking loud. lol

cops called numerous times... wasn't even a party....

i don't plan to put my kill switch somewhere stupid.

I guess im just looking for another ignition that's replaceable for the 510?

i want an ignition that can't be turn on with any key.

any ideas?

You have a 68 right? Key on dash?

There is your problem.

70+ has a steering column lock. And have fun turning the ignition with the screwdriver, the column remains locked.

You are going to need to be creative for a different type of ignition switch (like use the buttons on a cassette player) or just live with the stock setup, and add a few kill switches.

Matchbox EI, will allow you to cut the signal to the coil as a kill switch.

Short of that, just buy a police boot, and install it at night.

I like the suggestion of buying an EI dizzy and putting a kill switch in it. Two birds, one stone.

MSD ignitions allow you to do the same. You just ground out the signal wire. I did that with my '65 Mustang. Same situation, no column lock. I used a Club on it too like you've got in your picture.

You could also instal a brake line lock, like a dune buggy or drag car has. It locks the pressure in your brakes, keeping your brakes locked up. You can hook those up to an electric switch. I had an old Maverick drag car that had the switch strapped to the shifter, it only controlled the front brakes, so you could do easy burn-outs.

clicky clicky. lol
basically, i want to use a button as a kill switch.
like an ignition start button.

i think that the flip switch isn't as easy to hide as a button.
and the button is usually off.

Well you would need two switches and a momentary button, or two clicky clickys and one momentary.

The switches would turn on the acc and ign power the momentary button would bump the starter.
