520/521 wingwindow gaskets/seals

#1

Post by wayno » Tue Dec 03, 2013 7:31 pm

I ordered two sets of these 520/521 wingwindow gaskets/seals, I received one of the sets today, they screwed up and only sent one set, but when I sent an email about it, they said another one would be going out right away, so that part is undetermined as of now.
As for the gasket/seal, I have a NOS set in my inventory, so I went out and grabbed the one that has somehow lost it's packaging, and I compared them side by side, they are awful close to being an exact match, both are very flexible, but until I actually install one I cannot say they are good or bad, but it is looking good.
They arrived quite fast considering they came from Australia, so i am very happy about the shipping, but I have only received the one set at the moment.
Here is a link to the ebay auction.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/121219473123?redirect=mobile
I might try to fit a set this week/weekend, I will actually get someone elses opinion on fit also, if it fits, I could make a large buy to save money on shipping, as I was very surprised about the savings on just 2 sets, one set was about 130.00 shipped, 2 sets were just under $200.00 shipped, I wonder what 10 sets would cost total?

NOS is on the left, the re-pop on the right.

OK, I test fitted the new pass. door wingwindow gasket/seal.
I started with a half door I have, it's great, it weighs half as much.
Image
I removed these 4 screws, and there are a couple bolts that have to be removed from the upright.
Image
And now it is out of the door, it's sure easy and nice doing this indoors where it is warm.
Image
Someone has done a gasket replacement on this door before, as the gasket is in really good shape, and they used a pop rivet on the upper wingwindow pivot.
Image
Image
After drilling/grinding off the pop rivet, I had to remove these nuts/washers and spring to remove the wingwindow itself out of the frame.
Image
This is the upper pivot of the wingwindow removed.
Image
And the frame with no wingwindow, time to remove the gasket/seal.

I am just going to post photos now as I took them of the gasket/seal in the frame.
This is of the gasket area that will lay on the top of the door sill on the inside of the cab.
Image
The part that will sit on the top of the door sill on the outside of the cab.
Image
This is the lower front on the inside of the cab, note how the seal is not tight against the stainless steal wingwindow frame, not sure this matters though, as it also over laps on the outside.
Image
The outside, same area, and it's not perfect either.
Image
This area is great, making contact with the seal inside and outside.
Image
Image
The upright, the reflection on the stainless steel is confusing, it looks like plants, but it is just a reflection, and there is good seal contact all the way to the last inch and a half at the top.
Image
This is where I had some fitment issues, when I close the wingwindow, it tries to pull the gasket/seal out of its groove/channel.
Image
Image
The outside is fine in this area.

Another shot of the top inside area.
Image
Lower outside where it sits on the sill.
Image
Lower outside front.
Image
Inside sitting on the sill pointing forward.
Image
Image
Pointing backwards.
Image
The upper pivot area.
Image
Upright looking down on the inside, good gasket/seal contact the whole way top to bottom.
Image
Inside from the pivot looking down, good contact from the pivot to the lower corner.
Image
All and all, I think it is a decent gasket overall, but I will take it over to Mike Klotz house this weekend and get his opinion also.

Mike Klotz has now looked at the gasket, and told me he wants a couple sets also, so I am going to see if I can order more for this area(Vancouver WA/Portland OR) Monday or Tuesday of this coming week, is anyone on here interested in any, I suspect it will be $100.00 or less a set including shipping, this doesn't include shipping from me to you, that is why I am saying I will buy for the locals around here(Vancouver WA), let me know. If I have to start re-shipping these, then the price goes up, to the point where if you were to buy three sets or more, you might be able to get them cheaper direct from Australia yourself.
What I am trying to do is make the shipping cheaper for everyone in my area, they can just pick them up from me.
I suppose since flatcat comes to Vancouver a lot, he could pay me and pick them up, let me know what you want to do, and if anyone else in your area wants a set.

My second gasket arrived today, so I ordered 6 more sets, 2 of them are already spoken for, so there are 4 sets up for grabs, I am not sure of the price exactly, but it likely will be around/just under a $100.00 a set in you hands, even at the reduced price they are going for on ebay for 2 more days, it will still cost over a $100.00 to get them in your hands.
Let me know if you want a set if you live in the Vancouver/Portland area, as I don't want to ship them.

I too bought a pair and fit them to my 520 resto. Pretty much the same fit as Wayno described. Considering the cost and availability of NOS, these are a winner in my book. Ordering 2 more sets, one for my 521 and a spare for good measure.

I am happy that it is consistent, everyone has been getting the same product quality. :)
Did they send you a tracking number, the first set came with a tracking number, the 2nd box I had to badger them before I received one, still have not received one for the 3rd shipment, and I did ask for one.

Yes, I did get a tracking #. Not the fastest to reply to emails, but they eventually get to them. The first attempt to buy resulted in them quoting the wrong shipping after I hit the buy it now. They ended up canceling the transaction so I could do it again AND get the "sale" price to boot. That's pretty cool on their end.
