My First Subwoofer Box

Sub woofer box. 3/4 inch MDF. 2 inch screws. Wood glue. Calculated the interior volume to be .355 ft^3 (after the bracing, and that is accounting for sub displacement)

A normal box is boring to build, so I decided to see what I could whip up. I learned that I hate my table saw, mostly because the motor isnt straight. I need to go back and sand/saw off a few spots.

Tomorrow I will mount the terminal box, stuff it with some old pillow, and mount the sub.

8" Infinity. 250w RMS, 1000w peak, 4 ohm (my amp does 200w RMS at 4 ohm/350w RMS at 2 ohm)

So how much did this box cost to build?

$12 at Home Depot for 2x4x3/4" MDF
$6 for a box of screws (well I still have a decent amount left over so that will roll into another project) at Home Depot
$4 for a terminal box from Amazon (I ordered it with my Sub, and Amp install kit)
I already had wood glue...

Tools used
Table Saw (stupid Ryobi POS)
Cordless drill. I never even had to change out my battery building the box!
Jigsaw (I have a 12v Craftsman cordless one. Its pretty cool. Battery charge made 1.75 circles for the hole of the Sub)
Clamps
Hacksaw (Ok I just used my cordless sawzall, it was there...)

The box ended up being pretty heavy. And then with the weight of the Sub, it got really heavy. I would in the 25-30lb range.

Good job on the box!

I used to build these for a living. Use caulking with the wood glue, it makes it air tight. And depending on the speaker wattage and size (diameter) It may do a little better in a bigger box. There's ways to calculate.

I did calculate. And thats what it wants for a sealed box. Its just an 8 inch sub.


And now its hooked up. It definitely hits pretty dang good.

I might also add. While my recent audio equipment purchases have ended up in my DD, They will be going to the Goon when its back up and driving.


The goon will be getting a custom box, that will be part fiberglass part MDF.

Anyways, I drove around, I am more than happy with the setup. The sub seems to be able to hit low notes really well, and can keep up with Drum'n'Bass songs.

I remember my first beer JK
8" and 10" woofers are just about right for most musical styles. I am currently running two 10" Kickers in a fifth order isoberic, it's way too much bass, controls are on -5 on the bass end, and it's heavy as hell!

Good job getting the air volume measurement correct, that's the most critical part of a sub setup, that and porting.
