Yello620's new build project. 68shortfleet

Post by yello620 »

So I have had this truck since about 2006 and have been very funds limited to get it drive able. When I bought it it was a complete basket case that had it's last set of tags expire in 1982. It had been through multiple peoples hands all treating it like a project and dis-assembling it a little further each time with no progress toward saving it. I had slowly accumulated a small pile of parts that I purchased each time I could spend a few bucks on it. So summer I made a large push to get at least one drive on it before storing it for the winter(was only going to insure it for 30 days). Anyways, I got all my parts installed plus a few more that I bought as I was working last summer. First drive is about two miles. Second drive is about 20 miles to the exhaust shop. Problem free getting there. Came home on a flatbed, so much rust on the gas tank that it plugged up my filter completely. Called AAA to haul it home. Parked it back inside for the winter and bought a gas tank this spring. Have about 1200 miles on it so far this spring/summer.

Anyways, I started off by taking it apart to the frame. Coated the frame in POR-15. Installed a 75 c-10 front crossmember for the disc brakes and rubber bushing style control arms, installed three inch belltech drop spindles and got rid of the coil springs for airbags :D . In the rear I did a C-notch and again got rid of the coil springs for airbags.
It is nothing special under the hood at the moment, just a 350/350 combo. Looks stock under the hood except for the valve covers and aircleaner.

So here is what you have been waiting for.

And a LS swap is in the planning. That should make it interesting.

I never really mentioned it much on the other side.

Love the '67/68s. Those wheels are perfect too. We had a '70 3/4 ton as a shop truck when I was in school. Manual steering, brakes and a 4 speed. It was truly a chore to drive. I'm sure yours is much more fun. The LSs are great but I'd love to see something more unusual in it. Thought about maybe a Caddy 500? Olds 455? Diesel?

Have not entertained the idea of anything other than an LS motor. I just has enough good things about it that I want. Unusual Is not really the direction I want this build to go.
The LS makes good power, parts are readily available and not drying up anytime soon, it's modern(no ZDDP issues), All stock transmissions that came stock behind them have overdrive, fuel injected, and many guys are claiming 20+ MPG.

Hopefully I will have some new upholstery to show off in the near future too.

Agreed on all points. In the smaller, lighter cars some guys are claiming 30mpg and better.

I heard a rumor that you don't have the yellow 620 anymore.

I remember when I saw/heard that at the sole Beaverton meet I went to.
So jelly. That VG sounded hungry!

That was not a rumor that you heard.

I let it go a few months ago. Shipped to MN.
I'm all done with the rough riding mini-trucks, at least for a while. If I were to build another one, It would most certainly be on air-ride and have at least a VG33 for power.

I dig that truck. I like that the front clip is removable. can only imagine how easy it is to work on it like that.

Seat has been sourced. Picked up some ridiculously dense foam for bolstering yesterday. Have something ahead of you in line.. Then your seat will be on the bench!

More and more I realize how much I love trucks. After I sold my 620 I immediately found myself looking for a 67 Chevy truck to build..

:( :( :( :( :( :( A very sad day for me. I got this new truck and all I can think of is VG.

Glad to see your giving this old girl some love too though.
