So I got a couple of things done tonight on the A10.

FINALLY put the starter in. Something is still wrong though.
It fires every time now. But with every revolution it lugs.
Wondering what in the rotating assembly is awry.

Took it for a drive too. Started getting dark.
Well-the combo switch has been screwy since day 1.
I jambed my pocket knife into the light switch as I was driving.

I HAZ LIGHTZ! Kinda. It's really temperamental.
I'm still waiting on an answer from someone about a pile of A10 parts.
Hoping for some good news!

And...

So I was out running errands with the wife today.
We were going to split ways halfway through so I took the Datsun and she took her car.

We went to the insurance agent. She went in to take care of the business and I stayed out to watch the kids.
While this was going on, I left the Datsun running.
The Datsun has ran a little warm the whole time I've had her.
Maybe about 2/3 to 3/4. Never over heated.
Well, I go to get back in my car and the water gauge is about 7/8. Hot.

The car has a problem with the starter so I didn't shut it off.
I got in the car and wanted to get some air flowing through the radiator.
Well-I stalled as soon as I took off.
Pushed it out of the way and opened the hood.
Went back to trying to start. Smoke coming from the pos wire to the starter.
That is why I asked for a diagram.

Left car and finished errands with the wife.

Went back to car a couple of hours later.
Hard starting, like normal-but it fired up.
Made the drive home-water at about 2/3 the whole way home.

Thermostat tomorrow.

Smoking wire could be bad contact at the starter lug or the ground on the intake. Lower voltage makes the starter work harder. Clean and tighten them.

Runs proper temp when driving but runs hotter when idling isn't likely the thermostat. Sounds like not enough air flow through the rad. By all means change it but get a good $10 one not a POS from WallyMart.

Do you have the shroud still on? This is essential for low speed cooling as it increases fan efficiency.

With motor off try turning the clutch fan by hand. It should be firm to turn. If it spins easily the silicone oil has leaked out and there is too much slip.

Are there leaves, bugs, dirt or a plastic bag stuck to the front of the rad? Any obstruction?

Is your timing properly advanced? Any retard will dump heat out the exhaust ports and more will be absorbed by the water jacket.

Check your idle mixture screw. Is it adjustable that year. Later Z motors are sealed at the factory. If adjustable adjust it. It may be too lean and that will idle hotter.
My Datsuns, like good friends, have never let me down. At least in any way that was not understandable and thus fixable.

Thanks Mike.

Radiator is clean. I did that when I got her home when I first got it.
Shroud yes. I haven't played with the fan clutch yet.
I'll check on the others.

Another problem that I think is part of the problem is the idle.
It idles really high.

I smacked the carb with a rubber mallet yesterday when I replaced the starter and the idle dropped to normal.
Hasn't returned to that normal state since. Something is stuck in there.
When I say high, like 2000rpm. Normal, about 800-1000.

Idling high like that would lead to overheating conditions, right?

And the idle-mixture screw is the slotted screw with a spring, right?

How is it that I can work on overly complicated cars all day long-but I struggle with one of the simplest cars made?

Ha. I don't even own a timing light. I can tell a cars timing by hooking the computer up to it.
No DLC on a Datsun.

Did I just fail?
