ei dizzy diagrams
Ei dizzy diagrams that ive had in my phone for reference.
This is incomplete for sure, but I will be adding to it as we grow. And feal free to ad to or correct any info here.
Ill start out with what I think is the most common swap, going from points ignition to a "matchbox" dizzy.
Matchbox refering to the black box mounted to the dizzy itself.

Re: ei dizzy diagrams
There is also the "remote ignighter" wich is basicly the same as the matchbox but does not have the ignition modual connected to the dizzy body itself.
I prefer the remote ignighter for 2 reasons.
It allows you to ad inline toggle switches hidden inside the cab to ad another theft deterent.
And it also will allow you to use a gm high energy ignition module.
Dont forget to regap you plugs tho!

Place holder: If you plan on running the remote ignighter box, then the blue wire on the box, I will ad that diagram shortly.

Re: ei dizzy diagrams
Now I should add the petronix kit.
Its easy to install, but all reaserch ive done leads me to beleave its basicly an eletronic set of breaker points.
Its easy to install, but I dont see a real advantage other than you no longer have to "set" points. I dont believe there is a voltage increase so no need to regap plugs for electric ignition.

Re: ei dizzy diagrams
Hey man this is a great to have for anyone who doesn't know.
In my experience of doing this it took me forever to understand. No offence man to your work.
But I've got a step by step wire by wire photos of me doing this.
Also I didn't really know I had to change the wires around 'did not take pictures of'
But maybe mentioning it would be nice.
Shit I'm pretty damn slow so I don't know haha.

Re: ei dizzy diagrams
So here's how I wired my matchbox in my 521 master chief, if its wrong then... shit thats weird because my truck starts and runs everyday..
First I got a bigger coil, I grabbed this coil from a 68 620 from a junk yard. This year 620 should also have a HEI dizzy if you cant get your hands on a matchbox.
You can see some wires, don't worry about these right now just get your bigger coil on and your new dizzy in as well. Again this is for a "Matchbox" not the HEI.
Get your engine to TDC and remove your old dizzy, lets hope you followed your book when putting in your oil pump, heres the bottom of the matchbox
you can see in the middle there is a small, side make sure this small side is on the small side of your oil pump shaft or whatever its call. it's in your hainz book, don't got one get one.
heres the matchbox and my cat 'Catface'
You can see that it has tabs, this one doesn't have it but there should be a black connector thing like this one,
Next remove this wire
Put that black and white wire here.
with a new tab the you found some where you then want to connect the red wire where it is seen in the picture + side of coil, and do the same with the gray wire to the - side of coil.
the + needs three tabs or one with two sides like i had.
And theeeen the matchbox side.
this picture the black/white wire under the coil is WRONG. just so you all know. do what I say above, not this photo.
red wire to black/yellow wire, gray wire to gray wire. make sure your black box is not facing your block, you want to have it facing the front of the truck, doing this however you'll have to change your spark plug wire rotation.
Oh shit!! I forgot You want to get a bigger cab and rotor for your matchbox but i cant remember for the life of me what i got.
can someone help with this part? I hope thats everything
heres how is should be now.
if you need any help then ask away.
hope this helps though there is more then one way to wire these things this way does indeed work.
anyone please add if i missed something.

Re: ei dizzy diagrams
don't you have to regap the plugs when you convert to EI ? Seams like I read 38 - 44. Can someone tell me/us if that's right. .

Re: ei dizzy diagrams
Thanks
And I'm not sure about the gap. I bought NGKs and put them in same day I started my L18 after I rebuilt it and the head. I didn't change the gap. That doesn't mean anything
I'm interested in knowing if we should change the gap.
Good question Ni10

Re: ei dizzy diagrams
Micromachine also said the plugs needed gapped to 40-44. Mine are at stock right now, and its running fine. Though they may need gapped....
If you look at the plugs of a 72 year vehicle, they are gapped at .32 i think. And if you look at year 79, they are gapped the same, but have a different part number. not sure of the difference.

the us 78 - 79 & 80 are gapped at 39 - 43 and Canada 80 / 81 models = 31 - 35

Re: ei dizzy diagrams
You don't have to open the gap but you can to make use of the extra voltage now available. The higher output will easily jump a wider gap and this provides a longer spark surface to 'light the fire'. This is particularly helpful on lean mixtures at idle and the odd annoying miss at steady speeds.
This only applies to the complete EI system with the EI coil. If you still have your stock coil and ballast you are only running a breakerless system.

My Datsuns, like good friends, have never let me down. At least in any way that was not understandable and thus fixable.
