Grinding from starter/flywheel

#1

Post by blueghost510 »

So I bought a truck super cheap from a lady who said it was running when parked, but it had stopped running after sitting.

Got it home to find the motor (L-20) was seized. Dropped some Marvel Mystery Oil in the pots and allowed it to soak for a few days. Starter click, click, click....

I pulled the starter and was able to get the motor free using a hammer and screwdriver on the flywheel. Didn't bust off any teeth. Put the starter in and sounds like the flywheel is rubbing on the dust plate (loud as hell). Pulled the starter and put in another I had in the garage. Now I have a grinding noise.

The dust plate on the truck doesn't appear to be stock (doesn't drop to the bottom of the bell housing, and can see the flywheel turning under the truck while the motor is running).

The last starter I installed has a grinding noise and wondering if any of you have had a similar problem? Going to try and shim the starter tomorrow and see if that takes care of the noise. Have never had this problem before.

Shouldn't have to shim it.
Something is in the bell.

You should make a thread for your truck. That way you can archive everything in one place...
And you can post pics too. We love pictures!

So is this a early truck, like a 520/521 or an early 620?
If it has an L16 in it, the plate you speak of covering the flywheel is missing, they had a separate plate for the lower half.
Shims will do nothing on a L block, except maybe move the starter out of reach.
Was/is the flywheel really rusty?
Is there any gear oil in the transmission?
So you got this engine running, so the starter makes a lot of noise, or the engine running makes a lot of noise?

BTW, they all say they were running when parked, but they were parked for a reason, something was wrong, that is why it sat for so long.

The engine plate, between the trans and block is usually one piece for standards but autos are two piece so you can get at the torque converter bolts. Either will work on a standard. Look at the hole the starter goes into, you should still be able to see the engine plate and the starter bolts up against the plate. If it does you don't need to shim. If the engine plate is missing, I would get one for it. This will mean the tranny is too close to the motor by the thickness of the missing plate. The starter will be correctly positioned weather the plate is there or not... just think about it for a minute.
My Datsuns, like good friends, have never let me down. At least in any way that was not understandable and thus fixable.
