Kylezone's 72 s30
Re: Kylezone's 72 s30
Ok, sorry ive been neglecting ma thread for a couple weeks.
things have progressed quite nicely sofar!
Lacaeon already posted a bit. but ill supplement it with a few more pics.
obviously i pulled the motor, borrowed Lacaeon's cherry picker and his smashed up wheel to use as a motor stand lol.
Got that out and started cutting out the nasty swiss chease metal in the engine bay. coated the inside of the frame rail with rust converter as best i could
bent a new piece to weld in
got it more or less welded in place, It still needs a little touch up/ strengthening, but its feeling pretty solid for now.
had to make a bracket for the corner because the metal that butts to the firewall was.... not so great for welding to.
(yes I know im a terrible welder, this bracket it prettymuch the first thing ive ever welded lol)
Lacaeon makin some sparks
than I got a little crazy with the grinder.
yay for fresh metal!!
heres the floorboard getting fitted before I welded it in place,
note the seat mount, the bottom was super rusty and basically came off with the floor pan, so I welded on a piece of angle bar to give it some strenght/something to attach it with.
its in!!!!.... more or less, it still needs a lot of work, and I havn't even started to get the frame rail in, but im not super worried about that... tho I probably should be.
after that pic the Dash came out along with that temporary support bar.
a little taste of things to come...

Re: Kylezone's 72 s30
update!!
started getting the dash switched over, all the guages fit, but they mount differently than the stock 240 dash ... awesome... ill have to get creative with that.
got my heater box all taken apart and cleaned up, (forgot to get an after shot)
pulled out the rats nest...
welded in a couple more braces/patches in the corner of the engine bay. I may have gone a bit overkill... well at least its strong!!
and the frame rail is finally in!!!!!
after this picture i made a bracket to connect the front half of the rail with the new piece, and got it tacked in and got the rail in a bit more securely, but i ran out of wire =( its just as well since it was getting dark anyway.
I think i forgot to upload a good before picture of the floorboard, it was pretty awefull.
and the back end is more or less put back together! the big pieces are on there anyway.
I used sparkly dark grey for the taillight trim pieces, the picture doesnt do it justice! it looks amazing!
anyhu, theirs still alot to do in the next week and a half or so, but at least things are starting to get put back together instead of taken apart!!

Re: Kylezone's 72 s30
floors prettymuch done! yay!!!
welded in, seam sealed, couple layers of primer, bedliner. probably tar undercoat after that just to be on the extra safe side ( I really dont ever want to do this ever again)
the corners were filled in after this picture
BOOM!! its not pretty, but it will keep my passengers from falling though the floor at 70mph.
sealed inside anywhere rain or moisture could cause problems, its not done yet, I still have to weld in the rear seat mounts and what not.
inner fender patch is sealed/lined
AAAAAAANNNNDDDD... (drumm roll please)
Bam! engine is finally back in!!! thanks to Lacaeon. that was hell to get back in there! turns out L6s are really long, especially with the exhaust still attached... getting it in was the easy part, but we had a heck of a time getting the input shaft to line up, and once that was in, it didnt want to seat completely, but we got it in and all tightened down.
and than theres this...

That is the free ZX 5 speed I acquired. .745 overdrive. We just opened it to see condition. It looks pretty good inside.

Re: Kylezone's 72 s30
thanks for all the encouragement guys! its been really draining working on this thing non stop. but its almost there!!
Re: Kylezone's 72 s30
alright, todays progress.
got my dash pretty much put together, its a bit of a frankenstein of the 260 dash with some chunks of 240
the guages mount differently on each so I had to make a bracket out of angle bar for the center three and the spedo and tach are just... sort of ... glued in (I hate myself for that, but there wasnt a whole lot of options)
only had one small fire when welding it in =)
the 260 dash didnt have mounts for the defrost rails, so I cut them off the 240 dash (i know i might get some hate for cutting up a 240 dash, but its literally the worst dash ive ever seen in any car ever, it has a huge hole cut in it and severall super deep cracks and the metal frame is rusty, foam is deteriorating etc...
anyhu welded them in.
pulled off my valve cover and was VERY pleasently surprised.
clean enough for me!
tried polishing up the ol Hitachi tops. shined up a little bit, one of these days ill really get them shiny, but today is not that day.
anyway, got a few random things done, bolted stuff up, radiator is in, wireing is prettymuch done, number inner fender is completely bedlinered, heater box is in,
the biggest setback right now, is the passenger side brake bleader is rusted in really bad, cant even get it with vice grips, but i have it soaking in wd40 and ill try torching it tomorrow.
Most likely it will be running/driving/ stopping tomorrow! just body work and interior after that!

Man that's (^^^^) cleaner than PeeWee Hermans dick in a soap factory.
Wait, half of y'all are too young to know who that is.

Re: Kylezone's 72 s30
IT RUNS!!
wiring is a mess, but the parts that make it run are plugged in aparently lol.
also the interior is mostly in, dash doesnt mount super well if were honest lol, but that was prettymuch expected, its in good enough for now. Floor is paint and such.
valve cover is painted, all the raised parts are polished.
I cut out that nasty fibreglass patch and all the rusty metal that was underneith. and i made a new chuk of fender to weld in.
that'll get finished up tomorrow hopefully.
moved it to get started on finishing the
Masked, took the last few patches down to bare metal, and got it in primer
paint!!
The paint looks pretty bad in real life, i suck at painting as lacaeon will attest to. ill try to touch up some of the runs and stuff later on.
I ran to the JY today and grabbed the vynal for the tranny tunnel and a new starter solenoid for the truck. I was hoping to get a blinker switch, but .... you know how that goes, datsuns in the junk yard dont last long.
polished up the lower window trim. Before and after.
Cleaned up the seatbelts
seatbelt retractor springs have... seen better days...
the painting aftermath... some of it anyway

Re: Kylezone's 72 s30
to help stop the runs, scuffing helps it stick, as well as many light coats. just a little at a time, let it tack a little, then hit it with another light coat, etc. trying to do fast and be done with it will result in runs

There is another update, but he is packing to go back to school today. Yesterday was final assembly. Only to find out the turn signals, brake lights, and low beams did not work. As most know, I don't let those electrical gremlins win.
