Leak from headgasket

lol. I try and do a head gasket last, always. It can be done in a day. but, I like taking my time over a few days to do it.

I've been out there messing around with it for the last few hours. There were two bolts missing on the exhaust manifold. It took me two hours to get one, and have been working on the second for an hour.

Imagine blowing a head gasket, but not warping the head... yea that happened 3 times on my friends truck.

Swapped an L20B into my 521 back in the late 7s. A buddy had blown the HG on it and fixed it. It blew on me so I replaced it figuring he fucked up. Two weeks later it blew again so I replaced the head with the one from my 510 while it was out getting milled. Put the U67 back on again and ok. So, four HGs in less than a month. I could remove it in 45 min. with everything clean and torqued from the previous 3 times and no surprises. I don't think I could have beat 2 hours to finish it. Probably an afternoon to do.

It helps to have ratcheting wrenches, and manifolds that give more room. Also a drill with a 1/4inch drive for sockets...

The SU manifold allows for a straight shot to all bolts/nuts that hold the manifolds on.

^^^ and a stock L20 is a pain in the ass. i have ratcheting wrenches and its still a pain in the dick getting to the manifolds. almost easier pulling the motor to get to the bottom ones...

If you do get them off, just swap with different manifolds if possible.

BG...when tightening your bolts make sure the studs are tight and seated as well.



Anyone ever try to take Z-series manifolds off? Horrible.
I found with the last L I took apart in-car, a universal joint was the trick for those bottom nuts/bolts.

Yes probably at the least a half dozen. Exhaust are easy to get at but sometimes the stud backs out. You must mean the intake? Probably the same number but I always took the head off first.

I never had issues with Z series. seemed to have more room for me lol... except that lowered ST i had. that was a pain in the dick cuz of the angle.

Got out there and actually changed the intake/exhaust gasket yesterday. No more leaking or exhaust tick!!!!

After 2+ hours previously trying to get bolts on the the exhaust manifold was dreading taking off the exhaust and carb to do it again. What I ended up doing was putting the nuts on the top of the manifold first. Then putting the bolts and washer half way on. Was able to sneak the intake manifold in place and simply tighten it all up. No looking for bolt holes hidden under the manifold and trying to get a straight shot on them without stripping them out! yeah the exhaust bolts with the thick washers you can put on then slide the intake into place. much easier.

Unless you have a heat riser intake. Both heads I pulled from the junkyards have had them. What a royal pain in the ass.
