Long tail Dogleg, paging mike!

Anyone, and mike

Please school me on a long tail dogleg. What the difference is between it and a short tail, if any.

They are hard to find here. I was lucky to get this one, but it's stuck in third. I may sell it, but would like to know some info so I know about it, and what to ask for it. They have rebuild kits for 125 bucks but I know squat about trans.

A quick search shows they came in the 610 SSS or imported L18 (some anyways) with trans attached. and some 910s

Not the long ones banner. We only got the short ones in the S10 and optional in the A10. The same short dogleg was also available on the GX B210 but with a different bell bolt pattern. The doglegs on the '80-'81 A10s were a Z series bolt pattern and a slightly closer 1st and 2nd gear ratio, otherwise 3rd, 4th and 5th were the same as the L series.

I imagine the long have the same ratios as the L series short in the S10. A rebuild kit should be the same for long and short as it's really just the tail casting that is longer.

I have an idea.... Tim was this transmission stored upright??? Was it stood upright at any time? Possibly dropped?

Not in North America. The S110 Z20E came with a much stronger (and also long 31.5") FS5W71B. I have one in my 620 behind a Z24. If you found one then someone swapped it in.

Lots of stuff get swapped over the life of a Datsun because....

1/ It's available and fits

2/ To keep it on the road at all costs.

My 521 had an L20B in it. The next owner might think L20Bs came in the '71s.

I don't know if it was ever stored or dropped. It was in the truck when I bought it, both times

So to be clear.. the front case on a long tail dogleg is, or IS NOT the same as the short tail dogleg equivalent?

I believe it's the same. it's just the tail stock is cast longer.

Its called a long tail because the tail is long... It should have the same bearing sizes as the short tail

The tail and the main shaft will be longer. I don't see why Nissan would re design it over.

I honestly have no clue. From what I read though, only short tail housings fit. I want that tranny bad if it will work as advertised. And I am a returning customer.. lol

It is stuck in third. It will need syncro and while you're in there, bearings. It would last a long while then.

It's been in the truck for seven or eight years. I owned it for three and dave had it for four, and the guy before me had it done a few years before that so even longer.

now here's the kicker. The guy before me used it in his landscaping business hauling shit. I used it to move, and hauled motors, tires, moved from Puyallup to Seaside... Then made 5 half ton runs to the dump (some were more than a half ton), daily drove it for 3 years. And it was just fine. When the motor was pulled 6 years back, some of the fluid drained out of the trans. I very well could have put the wrong fluid in (GL5) as I was pretty new to the datsuns, but can't remember. that may or may not have caused the syncro to die.

Long tail is pretty rare. Mike, with the longer shafts, do they use bigger bearings? Thought I had read that somewhere.
