I mean, if it's cheap enough.. I say go for the DIY rebuild. That is.. If the turbo isn't a total bitch to remove/install. I'd even be curious to see how it works.. or for how long it works. You never know, you might get 60k out of it!

how the hell do you get in my head ? lol
I have the same idea ... will this work ... how long will this work for ... will it crash and die after 2-seconds ... lol .... maybe it'll last 20-60k miles ?
maybe I'll screw it up in assembly process ... who knows
I'll be pretty happy if it lasts even 30k to be honest ( keeping the mindset of things that are re-manufactured have "that" reputation. )
As or the installation or pulling it out of the car ... in this specific car.
It's a "bit" tight to get it in-and-out since the car it's going in was a N/A 280zx ... the steering box is well ... pretty close to the turbo lol.
That doesn't mean you can't disconnect a couple things ... un-bolt the motor and lift it a bit ya know.. hehe
In my other turbo zx car ... has rack-n-pinion yo ... should be plenty of room since no annoying steering box next to it.
maybe a crow-foot wrench or offset wrenches .. universals something something darkside ... to do the deed.
(IDK).
I'll try to keep the pictures up

Re: BLUE's Copper ZXT
When me and Skib out in the P79 head (before the one it has now) he told me the same thing that it was a Ray Jay turbo even the last owner of the car I got the engine from. It ran so well before no problems before but shit happens if you can't get to rebuild it I would more than happy to buy it from ya.
About the steering box you can thank my buddy john (parts manager) locally helped me put this engine in there he did most most of the work and had to cut that tiny piece from the wastegate plate to fit around them steering box, basically went off from someone else's build that did the same thing. I never got the chance to take that manual rack and pinion off that 81 zxt parts car. I'm really missing that car man lol I saw another one locally for sale for $1200 and it's an 83 5pd primered black paint job.
You doing anything with those wheels?
Don't forget if you got questions about the car I'll do my best to answer them, that head was rebuilt and installed just before I left and the gasket got cooked car wasn't happy when I was half and hour away shit went down yo

Re: BLUE's Copper ZXT
As always Arche.. thanks for additional info and help man truly appreciated !
Oh yeah 100% on target with ya and stuff happens for sure man no doubt.
Oh yeah... I've always kept you in mind with the turbo , and right now I'm cleaning the CHRA housing as best as I can and rest is almost ready to re-assemble mostly.. I'm getting paranoid of getting it and the lines as clean as possible lol.
ahhh !!!! ok I see what you're saying. Awesome on your buddy. +1
I thought that was a pretty good fit around the steering box.
I was just afraid of dinging the turbo or wastegate.. area .. whilst installing the engine (still am lol)
The rack and pinion swap seems like it would be a bit of a pain , but worth it (I've never done it thought lol).
$1,200 83 black primered ... the one with swazi wheels ? That thing looks like it's got potential.. I'd rock it
You're 810 wagon is sick though friend.. it's one of a kind in the area that I know of and setup right !!!
I was thinking of putting those wheels on my black zxt ..
I haven't thought much past that as other things have demanded my attention..lol.
They are nice... :!:
Thank you Arche really appreciate that !
I might take you up on that offer when I do have questions for sure.
Yeah that was a sad sight to see , and for that to happen to your car was definitely a shocker and unfortunate.
Trying to get her healthy again

Been cleaning the turbo parts as I go along... I'm trying to get the stuff as clean as am reasonably able to.
Center Housing .. part of the "CHRA" ... ( viewed from the compressor side)

You can see the (2) internal snap-rings that hold the (2) journal bearings in the housing. As soon as they are installed then (1) more snap ring on the outside of each journal bearing is fitted externally to hold them in place. Wear looks normal.

Re: BLUE's Copper ZXT
Still in the process of re-cleaning all of this stuff before using.
Cleaned the compressor housing. Paint is on there pretty good so either chemicals or bead blasting... or just leave it

11 13 13 turbo cleaning 015 by 71240z, on Flickr
Cleaned the turbine housing. 2-broken bolts arn't that deep , heat is available , and shouldn't be hard to get out.
11 13 13 turbo cleaning 016 by 71240z, on Flickr
a few surface superficial marks from removal. I attempted to be as careful as possible. Turbine looks good.
11 13 13 turbo cleaning 017 by 71240z, on Flickr
11 13 13 turbo cleaning 018 by 71240z, on Flickr
I have no reason to pull this apart. Waste gate is very free and clean/clear. If need be I'll heat it up carefully and pull the bolts out. Penetration fluid first of course before doing so.

Re: BLUE's Copper ZXT
Other side of the compressor backing plate. It looks dirty , but it is nearly.. clean. A lot of that stuff is baked in or something.
11 13 13 turbo cleaning 023 by 71240z, on Flickr
Inside the center of the compressor backing plate is where the dynamic "piston ring seal" (it's the type) locks in and rides.
The wears looks normal and nothing alarming.
NOTE: it looks like there is a "chip" off the edge of the center , but it is casted in.. so not a chip

NOTE: I have not... cleaned anything on this shaft yet until I figure out what is safe to do so with. Will be looking tonight
Turbine wheel on the left ... compressor wheel on the right ... (2) journal bearings on the shaft (gold looking) .... just to the left of the compressor wheel is the "dynamic seal" that locks in the the thrust bearing. This is considered to be a "hybrid turbo" by rebuilder's and parts suppliers from what I have been told/understand. Their words not mine lol .
Turbo Cleaning 11 13 13 turbine shaft pics 001 by 71240z, on Flickr
I'm looking at using a "staggered/step-gap" turbine side compressor seal since it looks like a superior design as opposed to a "butt-joint" . I'll be doing more research before executing though.
Turbo Cleaning 11 13 13 turbine shaft pics 002 by 71240z, on Flickr
From the left: Compressor side journal bearing ---> Thrust bearing ----> Dynamic seal ----> compressor wheel. Many of the T3/T4's-ish ... from what I understand use the 4-piece carbon seals as opposed to the Dynamic seal. I'm glad I pulled my turbo apart before ordered to be 100% sure.

You can see oil transfer grooves blue-printed into the thrust-bearing. Look at all those oiling holes on the rest of the components.

is the copper color a factory color or respray? looks good on your zx, wonder how it would look on a 620.

Thanks man ! I'm not really sure , but the engine bay (doesn't look re-sprayed/painted) is the same color , so it just "might" be a factory color.squatches wrote:is the copper color a factory color or respray? looks good on your zx, wonder how it would look on a 620.
I've never seen the color myself until Archetypedatsun made his thread on Ratsun.
I like it.
I'm trying to visualize what it would look like on your 620

No problem man, I'm glad it's getting the full treatment it desires rather it's going back in or going in another Z, I tried to do the manual rack and pinion I just didn't have all the tools to do it. I think its worth it, more space and easier to work on the car when needed plus it will be easier to put the engine back in when you get to that part.BLUE wrote:As always Arche.. thanks for additional info and help man truly appreciated !

Yeah that's the one I like it plus it comes with parts but I'd have to wait till next month so it's still a maybe. I can tell you so far everyone that has came up to is about my 810 they all love or wanna buy it lol that won't ever happen!
It was a very snug fit mm of space lol.
When ever man no hurry on the wheels!
The turbo is looking good so far a nice high temp spray paint would be awesome after some bead blasting, got any friends that do powder coating if so would come out real nice!

That is the factory color the hood may be a tiny bit off since i replaced it from a 81 zxt parts car they are very similar colors but most probably different color codes.squatches wrote:is the copper color a factory color or respray? looks good on your zx, wonder how it would look on a 620.

Yeah that's the one I like it plus it comes with parts but I'd have to wait till next month so it's still a maybe. I can tell you so far everyone that has came up to is about my 810 they all love or wanna buy it lol that won't ever happen!
It was a very snug fit mm of space lol.
When ever man no hurry on the wheels!
The turbo is looking good so far a nice high temp spray paint would be awesome after some bead blasting, got any friends that do powder coating if so would come out real nice!
Oh yeah the front end tools are what stop me sometimes ... I mis-place my few and borrow some to when needed ... front end work isn't my favorite lol. Oh yeah would be a lot easier putting the engine back , and a luxury at that.
Awesome man. Hope you can get that zxt. It looks cool and fits your style/collection.
For good reason they love or wanna buy your 810 ...
very snug fit indeed lol.
Thanks man. I was thinking about some high temp spray paint or powder coating as well
bead blasting would surely make it look oh so nice lol.
My brother has a powder coating gun. I might try it lol.
The rest of the "blue-ish/green" paint on the compressor housing is pretty well on there..

Re: BLUE's Copper ZXT
11/19/2013 --- Ordered a T3/T40E major component rebuild kit complete with exhaust studs (2 of mine came out , but arn't damaged in any way). It's been ready to get rebuilt for a bit now. I have just been occupied with other things :-/ . I also ordered a small surprise that may or may not get used in this specific turbo.
