Won't stop cranking

#1

Post by 71Goon »

I went to start my car this morning and the battery was dead (my brake lights were left on from testing something). I tried to jump from my DD and all was fine at first (though it didn't want to start) but then after one attempt I released the key and it just kept on cranking. The only way I could get it to stop was to disconnect the battery. Did I fry my solenoid or starter maybe? Ignition switch? Voltage regulator?

I did recently pull my heater out as well, but I wouldn't think that would have an effect on starting - wires aren't connected but there are no exposed wires either.

If it's not one flippin' thing...

Thanks,

Tim

Could be a mechanical issue with the starter... or it could be an issue with your ignition switch.

Must have been the solenoid - a few whacks with a hammer fixed it.

Yup - there's a guy not to far away that has a gear reduction starter that I'm hoping to get sometime this weekend.

when you was trying to crank it over and you let go of the key, did the key return to the run position ? Sometimes the ignition switch can get a little sticky from age.

My ignition switch leaves a lot to be desired but it was definitely the starter.

My Datsuns, like good friends, have never let me down. At least in any way that was not understandable and thus fixable.
