and pics of the fallen pins? Also did you throw in a new bearing while it was apart on the front case?

I am using a the short dogleg and the bearings felt fine so I didn't replace. But it's easy enough to tear down if there is an issue later. I am hoping there isn't, of course.. lol

So.. got a few more minutes in the garage tonight. It was just about as unproductive as a garage session could get. Spent the first 45 minutes or so looking for the new pilot bushing to install..... found it.

Go to install the bushing and.. broke it.

Not too concerned though.. it's cheap. I was more pissed I wasted so much time.

On the flip side I still had my girlfriends nephew over. He's 4. He officially pulled his first engine today. (He was the cherry picker operator)

Pro tip for removing a pilot bushing without using a puller. It's about as simple as it gets.

Step 1: Take rubber glove, fill finger with grease.
Step 2: Poke a hole in finger and squeeze grease out to fill pilot bushing hole.
Step 3: Get socket that fits snug in pilot bushing hole. For me 11mm craftsman socket (1/4") fit just about perfect. Attach 1/4" extension of your choice.
Step 4: Insert into pilot bushing hole, and hit with hammer.

At this point the hydraulic force should push the pilot bushing right out. Very easy stuff.

Yep pretty much. This method is really simple.

It was greased.. but still broke it. Fuck. Ah well, I'll have another tomorrow morning.

Got new bushing and installed. Slightly different technique today.. went in easy. giggity.

I'll torque the flywheel tomorrow and get the clutch installed. Might both the engine and trans together also.. then it's ready to drop back in.

don't forget to clean the flywheel like a mother fucker with carb cleaner. clutch chatter is a cunt. Where it is kinda grabby when taking off and shakes yo shit. I think that's what's going on with mine. No harm, doesn't do it all the time. Just annoying.

So the stock L 4speed tranny, does it only have a reverse light switch? No neutral safety switch?

afaik yeah mang. I was asking dmmike about the switches before... one was reverse, the other was third or 5th gear emissions jazz. It very well may have been a N safety switch, but even on my 720 ST, you could turn the key and the thing would start in gear or not. I don't think those are safety switches. maybe my shit just never worked, but I've had more datsuns then half the forum combined One of them would surely have worked I would think.

that is a N switch. But for manuals if you have it, it's a third gear switch that goes to the carb. On an automatic there is one extra wire that connects to two others for the only start in P and N deal, otherwise it's a third gear switch for your carb... If you don't ahve one, don't worry about it. the diagram i looked at was for a 71 510 sedan, i know yours is 69

Thanks for looking, and yeah it appears to be original. The engine is numbers matching as well.

No big deal on the switch. The dogleg has two switches but the leads are both broken off. I'll hit rockauto.

Unless anyone has these sitting around?

I would just leave the N switch alone since your car has no wiring for it. As for the reverse one... The old ones are always busted, or super brittle. the wires tend to break removing/installing the switch. If you can solder, then you can just put new wires on the old switch. Napa had them new around 16-24 bucks.

Engine and trans bolted together and dropped in. Need to make some 1" blocks to drop the rear crossmember an inch.

So I've been trying to get the tranny crossmember in.. I've built blocks to lower it 3/4". The problem I'm running into is the tranny mount is sitting about .25-.5" forward of the mount holes??

It's too close to use offset bolts and too far to force it in. So far, I've clotted the crossmember, the tranny mount, and even the tranny mount holes a little. It's close, but still not aligned.

Tranny is a 63a #1. I'm stumped..

Next is to chop and weld the crossmember.. but I reallllllly don't want to do that.

Ideas?
