All in all it wasn't very hard.
Wayno I'd like to thank you, without your ratsun thread I wouldn't have been able to do this. So thanks for being an awesome datsun owner.

Your Welcome, as you said though, it's not very hard to do.
I am like a meth addict, I like taking things apart, but unlike a meth addict, I like putting them back together also, I heard that this transmission conversion was possible, then I heard it again from a completely different source, about that time I had just destroyed my fourth dogleg 5 speed in 5 years in the work truck, so I gathered what I needed and gave it a shot, and it was the best thing I had done for the work truck since the L20b upgrade, and when someone like me figures out something awesome, I want to tell everyone.
I am at 6 transmissions to date in the work truck, 4 doglegs, and 2 hybrids, the only reason I replaced the 5th one was because it would pop out of 1st under compression, and the second gear syncro was shot from slamming it into 2nd gear when going up hills, number 6 is still going strong.
BTW, the same article is in the "how to" section here also, BLUE also wrote an article.

The only thing I noticed was if I wrench down all the way on the inside bearing cover bolts I was unable to spin the trans.

Something is wrong then, that cover has to be tight so no gear oil will leak out.

First I forgot to put the washer thing in the cover for that bearing. Had to take it off the plate and put that in there. Ha.
I'll double check everything tomorrow.

I guess I should be clear.
Wayno I didn't do the exact same thing as you..
I used the Z series short 720 trans and a 620 4 speed front case along with the 4 speed lower bearing oh and the bearing plate is from the 4 speed.

Like I thought I didn't put the lower bearing on all the way.
Spins free with everything snug.
Also dropped the one piece off at a shop to replace u joints and make sure it's sound to drop into a truck.
May be around 100 bucks. Not bad.

I have always wondered if this would work, I was lead to believe that one of the shifter rods was a different size and the case would have to be drilled, did you have to drill anything?

Re: soon to be LZ2.3 521 :)
No sir. Everything went on the shorty trans like it came off. Easy. Didn't force anything. I was also wondering about them when I took it apart. I said fuck it I might as well try.
Glad I did, fuck now I've got a 5 speed and a lz waiting to be put in. Drive line may be a week from now.
For some reason stores don't have brass core plugs either wth
So I'm waiting on those as well.
