and here she is!!
Fender mirrors showed up the day before I left for school.
hasn't really given me any problems since its been back on the road! just drove it about 120 miles in a single day, ran like a dream!!
i still need to get the back half of the exhaust bolted up so it was a little loud on the drive down to corvallis. But I made my goal!! the car drove me back to school and its more or less complete (for the time being)
basically it went from being a death trap to being a drive-as-you-fix type project lol. but even as crappy as it looks right now its been nothing but complements everywhere I go!
Here she is in her new covered parking space =)

So, trip back to portland didnt go so great. half way home, I started loosing power past like 3k rpm, just sudden intermittent drops. So i ended up pulling over in the salem fred meyer parkinglot to do a partial carb rebuild... parking lots at night in salem are.... not my favorite place to be. Anyhu, found out that the fuel line from the float bowl to the carb was prettymuch completely blocked off with sediment, not really sure how it was running at all.
lots of rust in the bowls aswell.
so, i cleaned them out as best as I could while still trying to get away from the crack heads as fast as humanly possible.
after about 6 hours i finally made it home... thats 6 hours for an 80 mile trip. basically cleaning the bowls/ tuning the carbs/ adjusting the timing/ and checking all the wiring dindnt really help. there was a lot of pulling over on the side of I5 and fiddling with things. worst drive of my life basically
got it home and Laceaeon came over to help rebuild the carbs,
He got some pictures of the process, but basically we just pulled everything appart and did a deep clean, hopefully ill get a chance to do a real rebuild with new hardware/gaskets in the next month or so.
havn't tested it to see if this fixed anything yet. but I have high hopes, we cleaned a lot of crap out.

everything is back together. carbs are in tune an valves adjusted, runs like a dream now! sipped gas the whole way home.
just did a cold adjust since i was a little tight for time. but its much better than it was.
also I found some metal suggar scoops at the PnP black friday sale, my fibreglass ones are cracked.
lots of plans for crhistmas break, carb rebuild, tank clean, install new suggar scoops, headlights possibly, and Jacob is pretty keen on doing the 5speed swap =) but thats dependant on finding the apropriate zx clutch parts.
just did a cold adjust since i was a little tight for time. but its much better than it was.

Yea, Kyle called me saying his car was running like crap. I was at work. Some times passes and his phone is dead. Then I see him post on FB...
So I went over to his house to figure out why his car wasnt running right, and I was 100% convinced it was a carb issue.
Anyways, I love SUs because you really dont need a rebuild kit to disassemble them. Here are some of the findings.
We each took a carb

Don't forget to use the 240z trans mount the silly 280zx one is only like 1/4"-3/8" (eyeball) difference on the bushing variance area ( back + forth ) , but identical to the 240z one.
If you guys are putting in a late 81-83zx 5spd .. the larger spring loaded-bushing 81-83'zx shifter *may* hit on 3rd + 5th shifts. (really annoying lol)
A couple of no-brainer solutions
* "blue tip wrench" bend the shifter back to clear (doesn't take much obviously)
* install a different shifter or custom shifter.
* Remove center console + outer/inner shift boots and ring ... then Cut or hammer trans tunnel at the front lip about .5" inches (remember the brake lines are running directly up and to the right along the passengers side of the top of the trans tunnel if you choose to cut .. which I wouldn't.
Who knows ...It could be just fine to !? , but the later 81-83zx 5spds contacted on both my 73's .. lol
Just use your s30 clutch parts kylezone , and pop them on the zx 5spd. You're good ! All of it transfers as matched sets (flywheel , disc , pressure plate , collar , bearing(universal) , and I like to keep the forks with just for good ju ju ) of either 225mm or 240mm setups.

not really anything to update unfortunately. its sitting at my parents house while im driving the 521 in corvallis (it has a working heater and carpet) but my mom sent me this picture from the snow storm lol.

got some work done on the Z
went home to drop of the truck and grab ol blue.
i got the new suggar scoops on, and went over to Jake's to work on his car and get a few things done to mine, we got the sheared bolts trilled out at the bottoms of the fenders and tapped them. now my fenders dont flap around when im on the freway lol.
had to put a hole for the bolt in the fender since i welded a new bottom section on it.
and than things started getting fun!!
test fit
i was getting sick of looking at the super plasticy fender mirrors, so i took them apart, cut down the seams and gave it a quick sand, and i sprayed it with the same Rustoleum "black night metalic" that ive been using as my secondary color.
SOOO MUCH BETTER!!!
re-worked the turn signals since i had them off, one had a nasty crack in it, and they both needed new hardware because it was all helly rusty and one of the mounting studs was sheared,
after/ before
got it all bolted back together
than I decided it needed a little somethin goin on paint-wise, just straight blue was a little boring. I wanted to do some kind of racing livery and put a big "72" on the side, but decided for now to just go with an oil cap elephant on the fender.
spposedly the story behind the elephant is that it was designed to commemorate the africa rally win in 1958, Nissan's first major motorsport success, Mr. K was the one that really pushed for Nissan to get into motorsport and shortly after the win he was sent to the U.S. to start Nissan of America. And ofcourse over the next decade he was largely responsible for the Fairlady roadsters and eventually the S30. so thats the theory behind painting the elephant. I'm also thinking about getting some vinyl sticker versions cut. if anyone is interested let me know!!

RUNS AMAZING NOW!!! revs to 7k no sweat! probably more but im scared to go past that lol.
aaaand just a random shot from the gas station
anyhu thats it for now. as soon as i can im going to pull the tank and celean it out.

yah... ive been kinda ignoreing this thing for a while.... its been my daily while ive been working on the 521 all summer. but i did take some time off from the truck to do a little painting, just for funsies.
the plan is to do every pannel in a different racing livery than sand it down to look patinaed (not rusty and neglected ..patinaed) and than ofcourse ill slam it and do the whole ZG thing. my plan has always just been to have fun with this thing because its a bit of a basket case.

btw the black around the gas tank is from where i had to remove a couple little rust bubbles. im getting pretty antsy to get all the rear suspension apart and do some rust repair back there. hopefully that will be a spring break project if not sooner =)
