I see what you are talking about, but that is before the seal, does the seal go in that far, meaning does the seal touch that metal?
I just looked at two transmissions I have, one shortshaft, and one longshaft, both the seal is almost a 1/4 inch away from that piece of metal.
Yours looks different than mine, like that metal is closer to the end, why is that?

Is that piece of metal part of an old seal that you did not get out before putting in a new one?
Will the outer piece of metal move backwards on your transmission, or is it part of the actual case?

Are you asking about the rear bushing? Mine isn't out that far either. Like I said earlier, there was enough space in mine to stack 2 seals. Not sure why Kevin's is backed out so far.

Don't remove it unless you plan to replace it. That's what keeps your yoke from flopping around.

I can think of 2 things to help diag.
1> Fill the tail with Sil-Glide. Like cram it fuller than a $2 hooker on fleet week.
Install drive shaft. Drive til it leaks. Where in the sil glide is actually leaking from?

2> Borrow a 4 speed. Install. Drive.

This is what my shortshaft 5 speed looks like, it needs rebuilt, so I popped the seal out.

It looks like that bushing has backed it's way out somehow, now what I am about to suggest may not be the proper way to do it, but I think it would likely work.
I would see if that bushing will tap back in a little ways, but it would need to be done in such a way as to not deform the bushing, now that bushing already looks damaged, but if it is pushed in a ways, any damage that it could cause to the yoke will not be where the seal rides on the yoke, but if the bushing backs out again, then it could ruin the seal, but the seal would be hitting the metal again anyways, so that is what I would do before removing the transmission, the way I look at it, you have nothing to lose.
I will repeat, it has to be pushed in carefully if it can in fact be pushed in from the rear.

They only made them for 2 or 3 years , I am unsure if the 84 regular cab/shortbox came with a shortshaft, but 85/86 did.
