Re: The forgotten Beige 69 510 build - NWD edition
I've got good news and bad news...
Good news, my seat covers are finally done.
Bad news..
Even though I cleaned the hood and coated it with WD-40... I woke up the next day and it corroded like a motherfucker. I spent a few hours on it last night trying to resurrect it.. then I coated it in PB blaster..
Still more work to do.. It's in Jesus's hands now. Do work.

Aye... That shit is hard to get off. Really gonna have to scrub the shit out of it to get the contaminates out. I've used WD on block head surfaces before. Does work good. just needs well cleaned. Hood is a large surface tho

I've heard vaseline works good although I've never tried it. Might be a bitch to get off.

try some used motor oil... Black would be good...
There was some use of used motor oil (I think diesel) on that rusty BMW.

Picked up an L20 with IR alt, matchbox dizzy, weber, stock carb, adapter plates.. and other misc today.
Guy had it in his 620 he bought new. Wannabe drifter hit his truck and totaled it. Engine spent the second half of it's life running a 20KW generator.
All that being said.. should be a runner.
$150

Actually there was a spare matchbox dizzy in a box too.
Got the engine on a stand and I can feel the crank has end play. Probably looking at bearing rings and a gasket kit.

just the 2 match box distributors were worth the $150.00, the rest is candy to top the deal off. Nice score.

Re: The forgotten Beige 69 510 build - NWD edition
I've got the l20 torn down to the block. The previous owner estimated it to have between 200k-300k on it. He owned it since new.
I've plastigauged the bearings and they all came back worn but ok. Obviously they were at the lower wear limit. I am now going to Mic everything. Plastigauge gives you a good idea but I wouldn't machine anything using data points from plastigauge.. lol.
So far.. looking good. The cylinder walls are a bit worn as I can feel a bit of a ridge. I'll measure those out today if I get time. Still hoping for rings bearings and gaskets.

The piston clearance is a little wack.. I'll have to remeasure.

I was too busy coveting you mic set to notice.
When the only tool you have is a hammer every problem starts to look like a hippy.

Re: The forgotten Beige 69 510 build - NWD edition
Got some bearings, rings, and gaskets on the way.
Measured ring clearances with old rings and the top rings is slightly over .1mm.
I'll measure with the new rings and see where I'm at. Not looking at replacing pistons.. so it is what it is at this point. Second ring is measured out okay with old rings.. so it's not all bad.

Re: The forgotten Beige 69 510 build - NWD edition
Bought some gaskets. Didn't really want to go with DNJ but I found a few good reviews. Some on ratsun and some on a toyota forum. So why not.. Normally I'd use fel-pro.
Also clevite rod and main bearings.. and some rings.
The second compression ring in the set I got have this step. The current rings don't have this step.. should I be concerned?
