A Bamboo Goon
I just picked this up, so I don't have much to show right now, but stay tuned.
Bamboo Tan with Brown interior that's in great shape for its age. This thing is a cream puff
All original engine, interior, and it has been well taken care. It still sports the original AM radio.
It could use a carb cleaning, but it drives great! I used the trailer to make for an easy lunch break.

That looks good. I sold a '69 wagon that same color with a dent in the same spot on the hatch. ^^^^ got the switches from it. Damn I should've kept that car.

Re: A Bamboo Goon
^ There have been a number of cars I now regret selling.
These days I'm finding it much easier to pick up another, than it is letting one go.
This thing is a blast to drive, I plan to do my 75 mile (round trip) commute in it the rest of the week. I have a 1,800 ft. hill to go over between my home and work, so it's a pretty good test for the wagon. If all goes well, I'll be taking it up to my Dad's this weekend (father's day stuff). My brother used to have a '72 510 wagon, his was pea green with black interior - great car - I wish he sold it to me (years ago). Anyway, he's going to be at my Dad's and I bet he'll get a kick out of seeing this wagon.
Today was the best darn lunch break I've had in years!

Thanks!Laecaon wrote:Welcome to wagon ownership.
This thing is so original. Yep, except for a crappy repair on the front drivers corner (rattle can) it appears to be all original paint.Indy510 wrote:Is it all original paint? I wonder if the engine bay will clean up.
On my drive into work this morning I tried the AM radio - WOW - it still works! I think the engine bay will be easy to clean up.

Craigslist ads don't stay up after a sale, and the pictures go away shortly after that. I snagged the contents of the ad for this car, so I could post it here.
These shots are great for showing what I'm starting with - a grungy engine bay, complete with bungee battery tie-down and a broken hood release cable.
1971 Datsun 510 Wagon - - $3900 (los gatos)

The drivers seat has broken springs, and torn seems, but I think I can save it. The passenger seat got some turquoise blue paint spilled in it by the previous owner. Last night I was able to clean part of it up. It's sitting on top of the vinyl, it did not penetrate it, and it's coming off with a lot of elbow grease - actually I'm using rubbing compound. There is another spill of this stuff in the back, but I think I can clean it. The brown carpet is faded and has sun rot, but the headliner and everything else inside is pretty nice. The outside is a little rough, but not too bad. All the lights and gauges work, the brakes were serviced not long ago, and the cheap tires (Primewell 155/80R13) have about 1K miles on them.Datsun is starting and running okay. All original engine, interior, and has been well taken care of for the past few years. Has approximately 90k miles on it. Registration is current and no smog required. Great car! Just moving and don't have any room to store it anywhere.

If you do this one the same quality as your 411 it will be awesomeness as well.

Re: A Bamboo Goon
^ Thanks for encouraging words, you guys!
Work has had me jammed up for a while (it seems like forever), and my poor 411 has had to wait patiently. Any time I've had over the last year was spent with my Dad getting his father's old car back on the road, and we're just about done with that project. One nice thing about working so much is, I haven't been spending as much - funny how that works. That allowed me to pick up this 510 when it became available, but for now I want to enjoy it "as is" as much as possible. I really want to get the 411 painted, so I can enjoy that puppy even more this summer!
That said, I'm having fun daydreaming of the direction I want to take with this wagon.
Maybe I should get some huge DUBs, jack it up and go full-tilt DONK with it???

Actually, after looking at the pics of yours, I'm thinking about digging out my old set of 13"s and stock caps and running them for a while.
Love your new wagon. Never seen brown interior before.

Re: A Bamboo Goon
Thanks, it is rough in many ways but I still think it's a gem.
I want to clean it up some, before I take more pictures, but when I went to drop the back seat down and saw how clean it is under there ...
... I had to show it off. It doesn't look to me like there have ever been kids in the back seat of this wagon. It's not perfect, there is signs of a spill, but it's not too bad.
The biggest problem is the drivers seat. I think I can save it, but it won't be "as good as new" because there are a tears on the bottom cushion.

Me neither, but it works well with the tan exterior. I'm pretty sure it will clean up nicely.DRIVEN wrote:Never seen brown interior before.

Re: A Bamboo Goon
The driver side fender, and the hood, have some issues.
I don't know what I'm going to do, in the long run, but for now I'll live with it. It looks to me like the front clip may have been repainted as one point - it happens. If that proves to be the case, then a future repaint of the front clip isn't out of the question. IDK? If the rest of the original paint cleans up nicely, I don't see the value in painting the entire car. We shall see, for the time being any time I have to work on Datsuns will be spent on my 411. I just want to drive this, and clean it up as I go, for now.

Not much to report, I'm just slowly cleaning it as I find a little free time - here and there.
I just wanted to post a group shot of my Datsun fleet at the start of summer 2015
