My bi-monthly post, yet another new 720..
Anyone who knows me has heard me talking about how bad I want a extended cab 720, for the past year or so.. Well two or three weeks ago I sold my 86, and buy an 84 king cab deluxe! Only problem is leaking power steering and had to replace u joints the day after I bought it. Came with 3" blocks, I'm ordering 3" angled blocks though, and either drop leafs or just dearching mine(someone give opinions on which please!" And also drop spindles and reindexed bars for another 2 or 3 inch drop, with bell tech street performance shocks all around..
After doing two years of slamming them the cheap way I've finally grown up and decided to stop being a Jew and do it right! I'm excited to get this thing going.
First I'm registering it and buying four tires, then the fun suspension comes in.

That truck looks alright Justin.
I had one with them colors a while back, I put a diesel in it and ended up selling it.
If your going to lower it, blocks and 4X4 leafs in the rear, you want them because they are firmer and less likely to bottom out, then drop spindles in the front.
Then you need to think about notching the rear frame so you can get even lower.
What ever shocks you buy, they need to be for the 520/521, they are shorter than the 720 shocks, so it's easier to get low without bottoming out the shocks, and if you need even shorter shocks than the 520/521 shocks, I can show you how to use Roadster shocks, they are as short as you can get, that is what I have on my 520, but if you go that low, you are going to need to make other modifications as well, frame cross members, exhaust routing, and other such things.
I like that color combo a lot, it's the best color other than red.
You will also need a better rear bumper in the future, them stamped bumpers are alright I guess, but I consider them senior bumpers, they will take a little bump without any damage, but they are not that attractive.
BTW, there was a 720 in the Vancouver yard with a decent looking Weber, don't know if it is good, but you could take a look at it, if you get it, get the throttle cable also.

Re: My bi-monthly post, yet another new 720..
Wayne I don't plan on going lower than my brown one was, that had 4" blocks and 4x4 springs, but on this one I want 3" blocks instead of 4 because I don't want my ubolts that close to the ground. That's why I'm looking at bell tech drop leafs or dearching mine. Or maybe get 4x4 springs and dearch those, but they are pretty flat to begin with.
Also those bell tech shocks are made for lowering so they should work well, I'll have to look into them compared to roadster or 520/521 shocks though.
And I'm sorry to offend your cat, flatcat!

I have never seen any shock shorter than a 520/521 shock, they are the shortest out there that I know of.
To use the roadster shock, you have to remove the lower control arm shock mount from the arm, then remove the sway bar, then mount the roadster shock in the lower control arm sway bar hole and the stock upper shock mount hole, the roadster shock has a mount stud on both ends.

So you can't have the sway bar still? How does that affect handling?

Re: My bi-monthly post, yet another new 720..
It doesn't seem to effect my 520 all that much, I don't notice my 520 leaning when I go around the corners.Justinberni » Sun Nov 08, 2015 12:27 pm wrote:So you can't have the sway bar still? How does that affect handling?
I have not removed my sway bar yet, it's still in there, it's just not connected at either end, it just kinda rests on the lower control arms, I have not heard it rattling around either, I was going to figure out some way of connecting it one day, just have not got around to it yet.
Here is the roadster shock mounted in the sway bar mount hole in the lower control arm, this makes it possible to go really low without having to raise the upper shock mount.
Resting on the bump stop.
Keep in mind that I made myself a set of drop arms, that necessitates the need of shorter shocks unless I were to raise the upper shock mount, then I could use 520/521 shocks.

Remove the sway bar, really? Are you fucking crazy?

Re: My bi-monthly post, yet another new 720..
I don't know why you would call me crazy, the truck drives/rides great, it's very smooth compared to riding in the lowered vehicles I have rode in in the past.
It doesn't lean going around corners, and mine are not connected, and have not been connected for 3 or 4 years now.
What issues would I have that would make it dangerous to drive without a sway bar?
BTW, I have not had a sway bar on the work truck for over 10 years, I had to remove it when I added power steering, there wasn't any room for it anymore.

IDK ... I think there is good reason for having a front sway bar with any independent front suspension - especially when most of the vehicle weight is up front.
Granted, having the torsion bars (which do not provide a progressive spring rate) acts "somewhat" like a sway bar - so it's not as sketchy as doing this with say coil springs ... but I would not advise it.

Yes Wayno I love it! Love the extra space for tools, groceries, and sound equipment!
Just aligned it at work today too.
I was in your neighborhood the other day Wayne, so I drove by to see if you were out and say hi, garage was open but there was no sign of Wayno haha

If the garage was open, I was likely there, maybe in the back yard.Justinberni » Wed Dec 02, 2015 8:06 pm wrote:Yes Wayno I love it! Love the extra space for tools, groceries, and sound equipment!

Re: My bi-monthly post, yet another new 720..
Welcome to the world of 720 Kingcabs lol. I have two 1985 Kingcabs myself, love 'em.
I really like my BellTech drop leaf packs but, I can see the appeal of keeping it cheap and going with 4x4 springs as well. I can't give any input on a ride comparison as I've never gone for a ride in a truck with the 4x4 springs.
On the front spindles, I highly recommend them. I have them on one of my '85 720's and on the '95 D21 I've got, had them on a '91 D21 back in the day too. Night and day difference in a 2" spindle / 2" torsion drop as compared to all 4" torsion drop. Also, no real need to re-index the bars when used in combo with the spindles, a lot of extra work for minimal gain from my experience.

I've ran 4x4 springs on an old 720, I liked it but gonna give the drop leafs a try.
I'm still gonna reindex when I do the spindles, if the trucks already in the air it only takes another ten minutes or so.
Show me your d21! I loved mine, but it was a pile..
