Trying to stack some cash for the machine shop.
I like LT1s but just don't see myself having a use for it in the foreseeable future.

Pretty sure part of that cash stack is pictured a couple posts back...

And I would definitely dump the LT1 as fast as possible while a few people still think they are cool and before they discover the LS motors. I know that I would not even consider one as an option, not even if it was free and had good leakdown results. A free one to me would just be the start of the money for a LS. Both need the same basic fuel system and similar harness work.

Do you notice that I am completely sold on the LS motors, and I haven't even upgraded a camshaft in one yet. Can't wait to see how one responds to that.

The LS is here to stay -- no debate there. I'll likely be dipping my toe in that pool with my dad's next project.

The comment about stacking cash was for the original 327 for the El Camino. It'll be going back in as soon as it gets rebuilt. The 400 that's currently in it will be going away.
The LT1 is something I acquired many years ago when I did an LT1 swap in my dad's blue '67 (see about half way down page 1 of this thread). It cost me nothing and at one point I had planned on putting it in my '35 pickup. Given their lack of traditional distributor, they fit great in those early Fords because of the firewall shape. In my opinion an LT1 is a much more visually appealing engine than an LS but that's where the advantage ends.
Anyway, I plan to just loosely bolt it all together, make it pretty-ish, and clean up the harness. I have a custom tuned ECM for it too. It'll find a home. People like shiny stuff.

Got a little freebie generator yesterday. Was a runner when it was shelved but it didn't start in the 5 pulls I gave it. Shouldn't be too tough to get it running again. 1000W should be plenty for camping, etc.

Picked these up yesterday. 1 at Sherwood and the other 2 from the South Portland yard. Picked both lots clean. My dad was in town and rode along. It was handy to have someone else to dig for tools and help scout the yard. Saved quite a bit of time.

The one on the left is the least desirable NWC with a VSS. The one in the middle is fairly sought after because it has a cable drive (with a bonus speed reducer/increase) but is still a NWC. The one on the right is a bit of a fake-out. The S10 only got a World Class in the '93 model year and I've pulled one from a very late '92 production. This one came out of a pretty late '92 and the tailhousing is a WC style. Note the stiffening ribs. I was pretty excited about it until I got it out and on the ground and found that it had the NWC cap on the cluster shaft. So apparently there is a hermaphrodite version. There was no WC version with a cable drive. If there was, that'd be the holy grail.
I'd really like to have a total of 5 to take to the swap meet. With the WC that I'd been saving and these 3, I'm at 4.

Side note: Sherwood was friendly, helpful, and relatively uninhabited. Foster was messy, crowded, understaffed and indifferent. It took 10 minutes to get in and we waited in line over 45 just to pay for our parts.

I also like the Sherwood yard because of the people running it, but it is the longest drive for me so I rarely go there.
I only go if there is a 520/521 in the yard(I go for the windshield/dashes), otherwise I stay away anymore, I don't like there prices.

I don't like the prices of any of the yards, that is why I don't go unless there is a 520/521 in the yard anymore, they want to much for the parts, especially plastic parts, one would think the plastic stuff would be cheap as it is not metal that they would get money for when it goes to the smelter.

I'm with you. I don't go unless it's a 1/2-off sale. In fact, I swore I'd never go back to the Foster yard...but I did. Because they had what I wanted and I couldn't get it cheaper anywhere else.

Yea, that bald guy is a dickhead, when I wait in line to pay I hope to not end up with him.
I have opened my toolbox and then left that place with the parts still sitting on the counter in front of him before, I didn't go back to that yard for a year that time, but a 520 showed up and I could not help myself.

South Portland is in fact more expensive.

There have been a few things that I have priced checked between the two and South Portland is always higher.

You have to look at the prices on the wall before you get to the check out and hold them to the published prices at the Foster road yard, and if they come back at you with, "That don't include the bolts" or some other bullshit like that, then you should just walk out like I did that one time, I don't have any issues with anyone there except the bald guy.

They have the prices posted on the wall and on there site, but that doesn't stop the bald dickhead from doing what he does, when I walked out that day, the guy told me that on that 50 percent off weekend I owed $48.00 each($96.00 total) for 2wd truck front hubs without the rotors on them but the bolts to hold the rotors were in the thread holes, I walked out without the hubs, in hindsight I should have paid that and then took the receipt to the attorney generals office and filed a complaint, but I chose the easy way out, I walked out and didn't return to that yard for a long time.
I have since then been waited on by that guy and he was great, I actually think he didn't charge me for a 521 windshield that I did remind him about, but I bought $300.00 of parts that day.
I just hope not to be waited on by that guy, I don't think he remembers or recognizes me from the day I walked out, because I bought that $300.00 worth of parts about a year after that day I walked out, I suspect a lot of people walk out of there without the parts they pulled because of that guy, he cannot remember all of us.

I know exactly who you're talking about and was glad he wasn't there on Saturday, even if it meant they only had one cashier which made for a long wait. He likely didn't remember you as I've seen him argue with 1/2 the customers that go through there. I think it's just his personality to be an abrasive prick. It would probably take a pretty big tantrum on your part to be memorable for him.
There was a guy like that at the NoPo yard right before it closed. I think he was the manager. We were checking out with 2 Explorer rearends and he wanted to charge us $1.50 each for the lug nuts that were still on the studs -- not even a full set, just a couple that someone had left on each end. We didn't put them there and didn't think anything about them. Not only was he trying to overcharge us, it was just kind of small-ball business. We had over $350 in sales there and he wanted to nit-pick about a couple bucks in hardware rather than just not worry about it and keep a couple happy customers. After a little debate we unscrewed them and left them on the counter. What was the price of "winning" at the counter? Two giant loogies on his windshield and door handle as we left and all the fuses, relays and hardware we could smuggle out during our next trip.
Why? Because fuck 'em, that's why.

That disabled guy at the North Portland yard made me mad more than once, but he disappeared to never return.
I didn't have any issues with any of the other guys, but I found that it was just easier to ask how much for a part before I pulled it, then there were no misunderstandings at the counter, they were not as busy there.

Started cleaning the transmissions. The 2 on the left came out pretty clean with just purple degreaser and the pressure washer. The one on the right was extra dirty. Probably go after them with carb clean next.


Also very briefly tried to fire up the little orange generator. Found it had no spark then just walked away. Too many other things on the list ahead of it.

Should be pretty easy fix I would guess on the generator. Those have stators?
