Have you considered more Harbor Freight butt connectors?

Well, I will take whatever left over harness you have. I would love to make a rebuilt dash harness...

Will see what I have left when it's done. There should be at least some good connectors and plenty of scrap wire to work withLaecaon wrote:Well, I will take whatever left over harness you have. I would love to make a rebuilt dash harness...
You should bring those steering arms to work with you one of these days, still needing them, not that I'll be doing anything with a wet ground. Speaking of that, $80 car port at harbor freight for Black Friday. I think it's 10'x17', perfect portable paint booth.

Re: The "Retired" 510
Harness is done but it's getting dark. Might have to wait to install until Friday...
FWIW, here's more photos:
I also figured out what the toggle switch is meant to do. Power switch for the gauge cluster backlight, and aftermarket tach:

Re: The "Retired" 510
Harness is back in the car. Still have a bit more troubleshooting to do, parking lights and gauge backlight don't turn off, and the wipers don't park themselves when I turn them off.
Got my taillight seals (inner and outer) today, going to wait until the new lenses get here to to install though. Oh, and a trunk latch to replace my broken/welded mess of a latch... Little things...

Re: The "Retired" 510
Oh yeah they do. I have this weird thing where I'd rather spend $15 thirty times, rather than that same $450 all at once. My indecision gets in the way of large purchases almost daily. And even if I am able to bring myself to make the purchase, I'll most likely regret it shortly after, or as the transaction takes place. AAARRRGGGGHHHH!DRIVEN wrote:...they add up.
I printed a copy of this out so I don't have to rely on a .pdf on my phone. I prefer a hard copy of EVERYTHING. Oh and the damn 'Common' fuse keeps blowing.
I also got that Krylon (SCB-004) chrome paint for touch-ups on the plastic chrome bits. It actually drys to a nice shiny silver/chrome, it'll do...

Re: The "Retired" 510
I have about 3 different wiring diagrams, all made by different authors. And because of this they all show things slightly different.
Go buy yourself multiple colored highlighters/markers, and go over the wires using their base color as the marker color. Makes for way faster reference.

Re: The "Retired" 510
That was my plan, I got a pack of yellow highlighters last week, and when I went to do this yesterday all my other colors were gone. Go figure.
I've only found one thing that is off with this diagram so far...

Re: The "Retired" 510
They are all mostly accurate. Just some are better in different spots. Like the Haynes one shows inside the switches. The one you are using is the only one that actually represented my automatic wiring.

Re: The "Retired" 510
Some progress. All the lights work except the high/low beams are switched, horn, aftermarket tach, all gauge cluster lights function, heater fan. so far so good, just need to get the wiper motor working right (still doesn't park itself).
Does anyone know what plugs into the circled terminals?
Here's a few shots of what I have. If you notice something off, or if you know what any of the unconnected wires are, let me know.

Pretty sure the green with yellow stripe, in your hand, goes to the brake pedal switch .... for your brake lights
It doesn't matter which of the 2 wires above the brake pedal .. when the brakes are pressed it completes the circuit (one wire from fuse box, one wire to tail lights)

Thanks, I think you're right. I'm going to get back into it today, hoping to make something out of it...Indy510 wrote:Pretty sure the green with yellow stripe, in your hand, goes to the brake pedal switch .... for your brake lights

Why can't people be nice to the wiring?!?!?! I think my Outback is the only car I've owned that still has untouched wiring from PO's.
I think my carpet is coming out today anyway, a few days ago I opened/closed the valve for the heater core by hand, well yesterday I noticed it leaking. nice puddle of coolant over my fresh sound deadener and old carpet.

Re: The "Retired" 510
That is fun. At least the valve is rebuildable. Might as well repack the heater core with foam when you have it out.

Foam? In the core itself? Never heard of that, but I did plan on making sure it's cleaned out.Laecaon wrote:That is fun. At least the valve is rebuildable. Might as well repack the heater core with foam when you have it out.
I got plenty! Wanna buy some? They're only gently usedDRIVEN wrote:Have you considered more Harbor Freight butt connectors?
Ripped out the front section of the carpet this morning. Found this underneath:
Each of those butt connectors was in place to split the wire in to two separate wires. Naturally, the extra wires under the dash were confusing the hell out of me. Fixed that, looking better. Oh and all the clipped zip ties were all within an 8" stretch, lol.
Here's a before (bottom) and after (top) of the dash vents. I kept the original chrome around the outside and on the rim. I think they look pretty damn good. Just one of those small things I might be the only one to admire...

Re: The "Retired" 510
Foam is to block the airflow from the fan from going around the core. I do believe there is foam stock, but it has degraded over the years.

Re: The "Retired" 510
Did you get the "portable paint booth" from HF? I have my sons car in one and can tell you that it will be cramped in there. The 510 is 13ish feet from end to end and roughly 5'4" wide with no mirrors. In a 16' car tent you only have about 2 feet on each end. Of course you could push it against the front and back for extra painting room. And you can bow it out a little.
Don't try to build it solo, twas kind of a pain just me and the father in law.

Re: The "Retired" 510
I didn't end up getting that, though I still want something similar. I didn't think about the space inside much to be honest. Probably will have to do one side at a time as my compressor isn't big enough any way...
Electrical is basically done, just can't get the brake lights working yet. Should have plenty of time to sort it out while I wait for the new carpet to get here.
The heater core side project is just about finished too. Valve has been rebuilt, box has been cleaned and painted, now just waiting on the new heater hoses to come in the mail. I still need to figure something out for the firewall pass-through fitting (mine's dead), I might just see what I can make fit right at the hardware store.
Fresh new heater valve!

Re: The "Retired" 510
Kudos on the heater resto. That's been on my list since I bought my car. I just don't touch the valve and it hasn't done much more than ooze.
