Hopefully that 71B has a Z series bell housing.
I would still try for a 71C, they shift soooo much better.

If it turns out to be an L housing, I might be interested in it.

Re: The "Retired" 510
There is 1 of 2 different pics you could have taken that would have identified which it is. You took neither. Mostly the top seem in the casting and whether it lies to the left or right of the bolt hole in the flange.
Re: The "Retired" 510
That looks like a pretty clean 620. Do want.. But thats the last thing I need right now. But, let me know if it goes up for sale, you never know..

Crap, I suck, haha. I'll figure it out later, but something tells me not that many people have had these machined to fit each other, so this one probably hasn't either.Laecaon wrote:There is 1 of 2 different pics you could have taken that would have identified which it is. Yeah, all three sets of wheels are 14's, my buddy is having a hard time deciding if he wants the slots or the stocks...
It is really nice. Floor pans and battery tray are blown out with rust, but the body is about as straight as they come. The green spray paint sucks though, it looks like it started out beige...yello620 wrote:That looks like a pretty clean 620. Do want.. But that's the last thing I need right now. Re: The "Retired" 510
There's a strengthening rib that runs up the spine of the bellhousing. If the engine mounting bolt hole falls on the left of the rib it's an L-series. If the hole is on the right, it's a Z-series.
This is an L

Re: The "Retired" 510
You run everything as a set. KA flywheel/clutch set/ throw out bearing and collar. Fork is probably the least important in this equation.

Re: The "Retired" 510
Got it. Clutch kits aren't too expensive for these, that's nice.
I've been doing MORE little things.
EGR delete
Single belt mod
Upper timing chain guides are gone
240sx oil pan on (D21 pan was on there)
Scrubbing away!
Now I just need some gaskets before I pull the intake and exhaust for cleaning and paint/powder.
Also need to replace a couple sensors that were damaged in transport...

Re: The "Retired" 510
Trying not to! Behind the scenes there's some sheared exhaust studs, and quite a few missing bolts. I'm glad all the parts I need for the motor are still readily available from Nissan, things like valve cover bolts...
As far as I understand, the 4-speed shifter won't work for the Hardbody trans, but the shifter from any of the 5-speeds will?

Re: The "Retired" 510
The 71b? Any b-series should work. Probably a 56, 60, or 63-series too. C-series is different IIRC.

Re: The "Retired" 510
Hardbody has the stubby 71C tranny (30.5", regular length is 31.5"). A shifter from a S13 works in those.

S13 short shifter shopping time.
B&M makes a fine shifter. Plenty of clones of that one as well.

Huh? You're both confusing me. S13 shifter won't work for the trans I have...

Re: The "Retired" 510
I think it's because you said "hardbody trans", that being a C like the S13. I assumed you were referring to the B that you have. You'll have to set us all straight.

Re: The "Retired" 510
Sorry, that was when I thought it was a Hardbody trans, turned out to be the 71B when I got the truck. It's a FS5W71B tailshaft with a Z series bell housing.

Re: The "Retired" 510
If I have this straight, my 4-speed shifter will work fine with it, right?
If so I'll want new bushings, mine are gone. With the weight of the shifter and knob, plus the length and looseness of it, it's popped itself out of gear a few times on bumpy gravel.
