The wheel bearing I replaced last February started making noises. Got to the point it was noticeable in the city. Jacked the car up on Thursday and holy shit that wheel was wobbly. I attempted to tighten the axle nut more but nope. I ordered a new bearing.
Got all setup today to change the bearing again, but stopped when I realized the threads on the axle were pretty much gone. So I sprayed a shit ton of PB Blaster at the axle splines and re-tightened the nut. Sure enough the wobble went away...
Im sure the bearing is still bad, but I may have breathed some life back into it. Ill probably end up buying a new CV axle too.
Tarp tent is always nice. I have a couple of screws in the house I attach it to. Keeps the rain off you.

That is a 3.0L motor for this car. The wagons never came as 3.0L just 2.5. Plan is to do a simple rebuild and drop in place. Deadline is November as I have emissions then.

Well... bad planning and procrastination has resulted in... no way I was gonna get the car through DEQ. I was real close... but nope.
Registration is done on Sunday (though I can get a trip permit).
It is now, buy everything needed for an engine rebuild, and do it. I am not working the last half of December at all due to trips and Christmas. So time to get it done.
Hopefully Ill be left with a car that is more than happy again. And I wont have to monitor the oil consumption as close anymore.
(This is why I haven't really been doing anything on here... also thinking about switching jobs...)

Its the same work for either motor. So I will do the 3.0 because why spend time on the 2.5? It also leaves the car in a running state longer.
I dont know if I ever posted about it, but I realized the 1 thing I didnt get in the purchase of the 3.0L was the MAF. Lucky me I was at the junkyard on a 50% day, and there was a wrecked X5 with the MAF just sitting there. Ran the part number and it works on the 3.0 (it was a 3.0 X5). That was lucky and cheap.

Got the motor torn apart over the weekend. Came apart pretty easily. Only odd thing I have seen so far is that 2 of the connecting rod bolts had a bit of Milkshake on them, but nothing else does...
I brought home some Micrometers to measure the Crank Shaft. They have a .006MM difference, or .00025in difference. I didnt focus on the numbers because I may be measuring differently than BMW, but relative to each other should be accurate. BMW ground the crank, and then used 1 of 3 different main bearing shells to match to the different journals of the crank. So its possible for a crank to have more than 1 size of bearing. Each bearing covers a .006MM spread. I was able to identify 3 of the 7 main bearings from the paint mark on them still being there. Going off that size, It seems likely all off the journals will take the same bearing. Guess Ill Plastigauge when it all comes it.
Massive orders today. But its almost done. $610 so far and includes all the gaskets, bearings, Head/Rod/Main Cap bolts, 3 different timing chains, timing chain guides, 2 hard plastic coolant pipes, and a new set of Hood Props (Mine just went out 2 weeks ago, Hood just dropped with no warning). This doesnt include the Piston rings yet, Over $120 easily, but probably under $180...
Oddly, I was able to get Head bolts for $17.5 (QTY 14), Rod bolts cost $33.36 for 12 of them, and the freaking Main Cap bolts. Cheapest I could find them, $7.75 a piece for a QTY of 14. From what I can tell, and find online, they are just Grade 10.9 bolts. So off to McMaster to order some M10x1.5x100 10.9 plain steel bolts for a cost of $27.22 for 20. I will need to trim them down a hair as the OEM ones are 92mm Long.
All of these bolts are TTY bolts.

Ive done some stuff. Basically I was waiting for all my parts to arrive. Of course the last box I got had my main bearings... and they are wrong...
Block is all prepped. Honed, 1000grit to the deck, degreased, all coolant and oil passages cleaned out.
I was installing the main bearings, they all went into the block fine. Crank went in fine. But then I went to put the main bearing shells into the main caps and nope. BMW changed the design in 2001. And the website I bought them from said they would fit... sigh. Basically another week out. This is one of those items you simply cant buy at conventional places...
So I moved onto making sure all the piston rings had the appropriate gap. And they do so that is nice. I also cleaned the pistons, because holy shit they had serious carbon build up.

Got my main bearings in real fast! So in they went!
Plastigage first. They all came back in tolerance, and very straight and consistent.
And done with that. Crank spins super smooth and easily.

Got the Pistons/Rods in on Wednesday night. That went smooth enough. Last night I also cleaned the oil pump out and the windage tray. So those got installed, along with a brand new chain.
