Re: Wynona the wagon's resurrection!
EXACTLY!! Actually, that idea has about the best option for me right now. Probably the simplest and it'll work without a bunch of screwing around. I doubt it will work unless going about 30, but that's fine.

Got two big bottles of water from the quickie mart half a block down, doused the calipers. Got them cool enough to unstick, then drove it back home slowly with the e-brake. We'll be changing those out.

In my day we called something like this a sleeper, something that don't look like it will go fast, they also do not draw police attention, but it sure is nice to be able to leave just about everything behind except motorcycles.

Re: Wynona the wagon's resurrection!
Thanks Wayno, it definitely doesn't have much down low, but once the turbo spools it pulls nicely. It seems to be quite long legged with the transmission as well. The transmission is the high point, it shifts like butter, way nicer than the original maxima trans. I imagine this will be really nice for highway cruising, should get low rpms.
Of course, I've yet to have it on the freeway. I did order a little bling for it. A chrome gts-t emblem, figure it'll be a nice touch on the liftgate. I'm definitely glad I hid the interviewer too, a big one would have just drawn attention. It's low, fast, and quiet. Perfect for a sleeper.

Re: Wynona the wagon's resurrection!
Alright, did some digging. Getting 60 mph is no problem in 2nd, made me wonder about the factory rear diff ratio. Found out the GTS-T had a 4.363 rear end gear. The auto wagon has a 3.70 ratio. One factory tire size is 205/60/15 on the GTS-T, optional is 16". The plus size for the original wagon tire is 195/60/15.
So the tire difference is .48" Smaller for the wagon size, which means my actual effective ratio is lower than 3.70 by 1.9% That's not much.
BUUUTTT, the differential difference is 15% HIGHER (numerically lower) between the two.
Total difference then is 13.1% Which means if I'm at 2750 in 4th gear at 1:1 for the stock Skyline, it's actually going to be at 2392.5 rpm. So a 350 rpm drop. I'll have to test it on the freeway to find out what cruise rpm is. If it's too low, I may need to find another H190 to set up. I'll probably try one of those puck style LSD units too if I have to do that.

I've got an H190 in the classifieds. 3.89 IIRC but I'd need to verify.

Is that from the 510? I'm thinking the spline count is different. I'd need a 720 one I think.

Re: Wynona the wagon's resurrection!
The 320 is different, the Wagon and Roadster are different, and everything in a truck made after 1966 has 29 splines, a few car models had 29 splines but I don't recall what they are, you can switch over the side gears from one H190 to another H190 as I used to do it all the time when I was selling H190 pumpkins/drop outs to 320 guys who wanted better gearing for their 320 truck, Roadster guys do the same thing, find a H190 pumpkin with the gearing they want(usually from a truck) and then put their side gears in it for the Roadster axles.

Re: Wynona the wagon's resurrection!
So off the diff topic for a minute, I'm thinking about something. Maybe over thinking. My conundrum is I've made a great little inlet for the intercooler in the air damn, but the intercooler is directly in front of the left front tire. When it's stuffed and turned, there's about 1/2" of clearance, that's it. I put some mesh on the backside to protect it from rocks, same as the front side, but it got me to thinking.
Yesterday on the test drive, the left front brake caliper seized. I ASSUME the intercooler heat exits, and hits the tire and tumbles under the car or out the wheel, etc. But what if I have enough heat to overheat the brake caliper? I know the side mounts are normally there, and there's enough air space and the wheels aren't solid, so they'll pass air as well. I'm thinking it will be a bit hotter, but it shouldn't cause any issues. Likely it was from the brakes sitting for two years and being annoyed.
Anyone else think I'm just over thinking it? Going to do the brakes in a bit here, just want to make sure I'm not going to have a problem with overheating brakes. And if so, what shall I do to fix it? I'm thinking air ducts to the caliper like the race car, don't think I have enough space to direct the hot air coming out of the intercooler.

Re: Wynona the wagon's resurrection!
You're overthinking. I can't imagine the air passing through the intercooler is any hotter than road surface air on a hot central Washington day.

Re: Wynona the wagon's resurrection!
Awesome! I knew I could count on you guys!
So the rockauto calipers I got sent match on part numbers, but they're definitely not Maxima calipers. I think they're 2wd hardbody calipers actually. Anyway, so that sucked. I yanked out the rebuild kits I bought, and they're right, but yeah, not as easy as it looks apparently. It didn't help that the caliper I took apart had a different kind of dust seal with no retainer ring. My rebuild kit kept popping off the retainer ring. And funny enough, the FSM shows an exploded diagram of the piston apart with a retaining ring for the dust seal. And on the install page, it mentions absolutely nothing about it. So, not having one in place for guidance, I finally cut it down to fit and made it work.
Finally got the fucking thing back together and bled, and it's binding. I may run it down the road a bit and see if it frees up, but sanded the piston, sanded the bore, found the rub spots from the piston being annoyed. Also found a completely seized guide pin, which I think is what caused the issue in the first place. Rebuilt those. I may just stick the old set I had laying around from ugly Betty and bleed them really good. Maxima calipers are not exactly in every part store now. In fact, they're just plain rare.
My other thought of the night: What other common caliper might fit on the Maxima rotor? I'd like to find something off a newer Sentra or what not, but I might be pissing in the wind.
And I also have drips off the transmission drain plug. It had drips originally too, and some rtv around it. Apparently it was a problem for the Japanese guy too. So that's something else to address.

Re: Wynona the wagon's resurrection!
Ok, doing some ratio research.
For the Maxima 5 speed:
1st 3.321
2nd 2.077
3rd 1.308
4th 1.000
5th .752
Rev 3.382
For the R32 5 speed box, this is for R33, but they seem to be the same Nissan 5 speed from what I've researched, though the final drive ratio is 4.11 on the R33, up from 4.363 on the R32. It's not very far off. 1st and 2nd are definitely longer, but it looks like 3rd through 5th are actually almost identical. So it may be just fine once I get it on the highway. And it does give me nice legs for the 1-2 to stuff unsuspecting motorists from the light.
1st - 3.214
2nd - 1.925
3rd - 1.302
4th - 1.000
5th - 0.752
R - 3.369
It does seem the power falls off after 6500. I did some searching for dyno charts of stock RB20DETs, and it seems to support that. I can rev to 7 but it's done with airflow by that time. I'd need to upgrade the turbo to make use of the extra rpm. Which means a different turbo, fuel system, etc. And I'm not going down that path....yet. I just re-confirmed it is a 3.70 ratio for the live axle in the wagon for automatic. (Wagon was originally auto)

Re: Wynona the wagon's resurrection!
Hi Matt, yes, fine here but I do worry about you guys down there. In late March I was let go from my job but given 2 months (8 weeks) pay as a going away. Almost 28 years with them but I had almost zero problems getting over it. So for now I'm unemployed and looking forward to full retirement. Working on a killer tan this summer, something I haven't done since I was a teenager. Going over my 710 for a road trip to Calgary to see my newest grandson very soon. On the way picking up a spare 15/16" zx master. Woot! road trip!!
Betty caught me off guard for sure. Shit was moving past the windows pretty fast for this old guy.
So RB20 now? Basically the RB26's little brother? I've seen an RB20 block it has oil squirters for the under sides of the pistons.
The Maxima 5 speed was replaced previously? Is it a 71C? Should be a mid ratio but 5th should be 0.864 or 0.833 not 0.752. The ZX 5 speeds had 0.773 and 0.745

Re: Wynona the wagon's resurrection!
Hey Mike! The Maxima gear ratios are special, different than 280zx. I have the FSM for that, I can send you all the gear tables if you'd like? Yep, 2.0 inline 6 turbo! Sounds like a definite fun road trip, avoid the covid!

Re: Wynona the wagon's resurrection!
Best of all the 6 cylinder sound!!!
My info shows exact same ratios but 0.864 for 5th. About 13.6% OD and more usable.

As far as I know, the maxima is the only trans that got the super od fifth gear. Everything is odd on a 910, lol
